Culturama 2019 – Season 1 Rehersals and Progress #LO4 #LO5

Culturama so far has been a wonderful experience. Being able to work in such a positive, determined and cooperative environment has inspired me to play a more active role in the school community.

It has been very exciting watching our dance come together every week and I think the leaders have done a great job keeping all of us on track and teaching us the choreography. Through these few weeks, getting to know my fellow dance mates and helping each other out in terms of choreography whilst having a great time allowed me to work on team building and communication skills.

Every Monday, Culturama Argentina has met up during lunch to learn and rehearse our dance routine in preparation for the performances in the final week. Our dance is a partner tango which is a style of dance I have not tried before and I have learnt to appreciate this new style of dance despite having no prior exposure. Some difficulties faced included refining the moves so they reflected the unique style and charisma of the waltz. To do this, I observed the dance leaders so that I could understand the dynamics and motion of certain movements such as twists and steps. The style is not only unique in its choreography, but also in its execution. The facial expression, sharp movements and body posture were important in creating the tone of the dance.

As each week passed and we learned more of the dance, we were able to incorporate and practise with live music. The live violinist and pianist definitely sounded amazing however the music was slightly different to what we had previously rehearsed with so it was more difficult to spot our cues in the music. We overcame this challenge by listening to the music over and over again with the leaders showing us when to begin certain moves and with time and practice, we improved a lot.
