ELP – Article Headlines

  1. Do NOT wear masks. DOCTORS need them more than you. This headline is bias against the Australian Government for their advice that people should not wear masks in light of the COVID-19 outbreak due to the high demand and hence shortage for healthcare workers. This idea contradicts many policies implemented in some of the largest cities around the world. The truncated sentences creates a commanding tone and the capitalisation of the word NOT and DOCTORS mocks the government’s strategy of prioritising healthcare workers, and their lack of attention towards individual values.
  2. Australian Government protects our front line workers, ensuring a sufficient supply of masks for doctors. This headline is bias towards the government as their policy protects those working in fields of healthcare. Using words such as ‘protect’ creates a tone with the impression that the government is doing a good deed. It also eliminates the perspective of citizens who now are not able to buy masks to maintain the bias.
  3. The Australian Government do not recommend the public to wear masks as incorrect use could increase the risk of virus transmission. This headline is relatively neutral as it states the facts and does not address the benefits nor consequences on the different parties involved. There is no perspective of the author as well, and the main statement from the government is supported by more scientific reasoning.
