This year's dance told the story of Bajirao Mastani and was led by Sashwika Venkatraman and Nandini Ganesh.

our story

Our dance depicts the famous love story of Bajirao and Mastani. Bajirao was born to a Hindu family and trained by his father in military combat from a young age, which prepared him for the heavy challenges he faced as a Peshwa —prime minister of the Maratha empire—during the early 18th century. Mastani was born to Maharaja Chhatrasal (a Rajput king) and his Persian courtesan Ruhaani Bai Begum, which is why Mastani had connections with Hinduism and Islam. After Bajirao helped Chhatrasal defeat Muhammad Khan Bangash in 1728 when his kingdom was invaded, he was awarded the hand of Mastani, which he accepted. Their marriage was looked down upon because of Mastani’s heritage, however Bajirao’s love for Mastani was proven time and time again. He and Mastani were the earliest examples of defiance towards traditional, restrictive beliefs, and their story still plays a significant role in the acceptance of love regardless of religion.
