This year's dance told the story of "Anansi and the Dispersal of Wisdom" and was led by Phunziro Phuza and Lorette Leone.

our story

Our dance is inspired by a story of an Akan folktale which is “Anansi and the Dispersal of Wisdom“. Anansi is sometimes considered to be the god of all knowledge and takes the form of a spider. In this tale, Anansi tries to collect all the wisdom of the world in a pot, despite already being very clever, to store it in a safe place. Ultimately, Anansi fails and the wisdom ends up washing away in a river where it is distributed to the world. Anansi stories are most loved for their simplicity but still having explicit morals that people can learn from. From this story, we see the importance of generosity and cooperation within a community and that is what we hope to convey through our dance. Our dance is divided into different sections with energetic and vibrant movements drawing from different Nigerian dance styles and emphasises cooperation and unity of people in leading a harmonious life
