ESWATINI
This year’s Eswatini dance is lead by Tshepo Bonolo Matome Molotja and Yamiko Sumais
We take our inspiration from 1967, His Majesty King Sobhuza II, Ingwenyama of Eswatini, who said when granting the UWC in Eswatini, Waterford the name “Kamhlaba” which describes Waterfords culturally rich and diverse community. “We are all of the earth, which does not see differences of colour, religion or race. We are ‘kamhlaba’ – all of one world.” and this is closely related to our theme for this year “There is more in us”. Therefore, we intend on representing the pride which Eswatini has in their traditional reed dance. Dance is Swazi’ cultural identity and every single member of the community is expected to participate during cultural celebrations. Over the years, dance has and continues to evolve however Eswatini has made an effort to preserve their cultural dances. In this case being the UWCSEA 50th Anniversary. Swazi dance brings people together in unison and unites people around a song. Traditional reed dance was also performed prior to battle as a way of instilling unity, rhythm and power, and this would be good to highlight the recent events happening in Eswatini. We would proceed to showing the advancements in music and dance in Eswatini as the years have gone by. Every dance in this section, will represent the continual growth of a nation, and the momentum to reach complete freedom and success. A huge part of this will be representing how the youth has had an impact in the growth of the nation, and still continue to fight forward. This will be represented through a variation of dances such as: the famous Amapiano dance and a fusion of afro dance.
Quick Quiz: What does "Kamhlaba" mean?
When His Majesty King Sobhuza II, the former Ngwenyama of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), visited the Waterford Kamhlaba UWC of Southern Africa in 1967, he gave it the name “Kamhlaba”, by which he meant both “of the world”, a world in miniature, and also that we are “of the earth” and therefore without distinctions such as race or religion.
