In the past few weeks, the focus of our English classes has been unpacking, analysing and discussing the Greek play Medea, written by Euripedes and centred around a woman who will kill her children. What has been especially interesting for me has been examining Medea’s complex and conflicted character within social contexts and the role of the woman (as a mother, sister, daughter or wife) traversing across time.
I surprised myself by having relatively strong feelings about Medea (which I did not have for Hedda Gabler, a character we looked at earlier in the year). This was something that definitely transformed the way my observations developed as we began to pick apart individual scenes in the play. I held pity, admiration, sympathy and empathy for Medea at varying points in the plot, and the complexity of my own response to Medea was an additional element I had to supervise and regulate in order to present a balanced interpretation and analysis of the play. For example, I held great regard for her within her encounters with Jason and in the ways in which she manipulated her exchanges with the male characters. I thought her cunning, but in a celebratory way – I admired the strength of her agency. However, I also felt empathy for her suffering and her motherhood, her grief and her guilt, but pity for her circumstance and her reactions to her situation. I think that as part of a modern audience, my reaction is heavily influenced by my own beliefs that are shaped by modern feminism, and this is something I learned to take into consideration as I shaped my analysis of the play.
Another thing I found interesting was the examination and comparison of multiple translations and adaptations of the play, and upon which sentences or lines the emphasis was placed, or where in the play edits or new metaphors were introduced. This transformed the way I viewed interpretation – it revealed to me the nuances in different perspectives as they viewed the text, as well as how the text transforms over time depending on which societal lens it is examined through. Watching the play adapted for a modern audience was also incredibly interesting, especially within the costume design, blocking, staging and lighting, and truly changed the way I read plays. Medea’s white pantsuit, I felt, was a wonderful choice of clothing due to the symbolicism of the colour, and the way it conveyed her agency using pants instead of a skirt, yet still emphasizing a feminine waist and cut. I also thought it was interesting that the place where Medea kills her children is bathed in bright white light, and as Jason approaches the murder scene at the end of the play, the white light shines upon his face, casting a shadow across the stage. Through this play, I learned to observe details such as these, and I feel that this certainly enriched my experience and understanding.
Although I probably could write at some length more what I thought about Medea, I feel that the insights above are more than sufficient. Thank you for reading đ

Poetry: A Learning ProcessÂ
Throughout our exploration of poetry in class this year, I’ve been able to expand my knowledge of the different techniques used by poets to create meaning, but also further explore the ideas of voice and identity. My notes now contain a whole list of questions and techniques that I can use to rip apart a poem for analysis, and with each poem we encounter I get to refine these skills more. Something that I particularly liked about studying poetry was studying rhyme – all the different types of rhyme, and especially how they can be used in a musical context (whether that’s in the cadence and pacing of a poem, or in songs themselves).
We looked at one poet in particular – Philip Larkin, exploring the way he uses slang, colloquialisms and coarser, more vulgar language in poetry and the effect that this has on the way the reader perceives the speaker of the poem. I found this interesting because of the way we often view poetry as something formal or something ‘beautiful’ to be appreciated, but there’s nothing ‘beautiful’ about the word ‘piss’.
Something challenging for me while exploring poetry (and something I’d like to continue working on in the future) is in the way that I read it. Being so accustomed to reading prose, sometimes the enjambment and/or sudden stops in lines confuse me, and I start thinking of it as a grammatical error rather than a purposeful choice made by the poet in the way they structure their poem.
I look forward to reading other different poems from different poets (BIPOC/LGBTQ+ poetry, for example)!

First English ATL Reflection:Â
In terms of Self-Management, this year I would like to focus on setting challenging goals for myself and pursuing them with optimism and enthusiasm. I look forward to reading fascinating and obscure literature, to represent womxn/queer voices that are rarely expressed in our current literary canon. I do have systems and schedules in place to get all work done and stay organised, such as my calendar, to-do list and drive folder.
When it comes to collaboration, I would very much like to become more attuned to my peers contributions and allow room for many ideas. In literature, there is no ‘correct’ method of interpretation for a text, and even believability for each interpretation is inherently subjective. In accordance with my goals for self-management, I would also like to hear the voices of my peers in the classroom.
Lastly, in Communication, I wish to become more aware of the consequences of my words, whether verbal or written. I would like to listen to understand, rather than listen to respond. I am an outspoken individual in English class, and reading is solace, but within a classroom setting, those things become double edged swords, and so in tandem with my collaboration goals I would like to help foster a respectful, encouraging environment (that I will also be a part of) within my English classroom.

Visual Language: Albums
I still recall the very first English lesson I had in my last year of middle school, where my teacher asked us a very curious question. Could a piece of music be a text?Â
The word âtextâ is tricky. Even the word âartâ; people enjoy assuming the word means âpaintings and stuffâ. But there is a strange sense of solidarity between writers, painters, composers, sculptors, poets and playwrights, that they are all creators in their own right. They are the creators of thoughts inside other peopleâs heads.Â
Is it right that we call this âartâ? Or is âtextâ a better word for it?Â
It doesnât help that whenever we create presentations, the options are divided between âtext boxâ and âimageâ, even though an image might be considered a text in the first place.Â
By my 8th grade English teacherâs definition, a text is anything that can be interpreted.Â
We can interpret images, sure we can. Images can create thoughts in our head just as well as words can, perhaps even better, hence the saying âa picture is more than a thousand wordsâ. We have videos to accompany our music, advertisements lining our streets, covers on the front of our books, cartoons for our children in our homes.Â
Visual language is a funny term. After all, language is auditory. It makes me picture that whenever someone talks, the words that theyâre saying fly out of their mouth in 3D letters, dissipating into the air afterwards, as if we were walking subtitle generators. But we forget, does language have to be in words? Does art have to be in words?Â
How did we form such a bias towards writing?Â
So in the spirit of teenage angst, Iâd like to look today at a few album covers. This is an excerpt from the full analysis. You probably wonât have seen these, since Iâm bringing in K-pop – thatâs right, Korean music album covers. (Iâm a teenager, spare me.)Â
Gender, Power, and K-Pop AlbumsÂ
There is ALWAYS a connection to gender. It doesnât matter where you look, gender expectations are so ingrained into our society that we barely realise the connotations our words have. I find it quite surreal that some of us get twinges of discomfort whenever males are given the adjective âprettyâ.Â
But still, here are some quite recent albums, one by a boy group, one by a girl group. Itâs quite obvious which is which. I am not saying this because of the colour scheme. I think weâve moved past that and there are enough K-pop girl group album covers with the colour blue in them.

First of all, Iâd like to point out the shiny gold lettering in a cursive script on Everglowâs cover (the girl group, for their 2020 album âReminiscenceâ), whereas the sans serif all caps on Oneus (pronounced won-us, for their debut song âValkyrieâ in 2019). I have noticed that a lot of girl groups and female artists enjoy using cursive or serif lettering (not ALL), and that male groups very much enjoy sans serif all caps. Is it a strength thing? Is it a power thing? I think it could be, since male K-pop groups tend to go for more powerful concepts, especially with songs. Fast-paced dance tracks are a common staple amongst boy groups, accompanied by some impressive choreography that is often a lot more physically strenuous than girl group choreographies. This is reflected naturally within the album cover.Â
Not to mention, a lot of the girl group albums that I was looking at feature explicitly the members of the group, whereas boy groups tend to use other visuals, logos and heavy branding. This is NOT true for all boy groups. Some boy groups that like to feature their faces (sometimes) include Seventeen, NCT and some GOT7 albums. Some girl groups that donât always feature their memberâs faces include Red Velvet, 3YE and some Apink albums. However, there is a general trend that girl group albums are more likely to feature the artists’ faces.Â
Interestingly, in the past, it was very common for K-pop artists to put their faces on the album cover. (I say artists, itâs really the company branding them, which is a whole new topic).Â
An exception to this trend is in solo artists. Regardless of the gender, male and female solo artists display their faces on the covers of their albums. Perhaps this is because of advertising, that itâs easier to edit their faces on there. However, a much more plausible reason is the phenomenon of âgroup cultureâ in K-pop. Groups are much more popular than solo artists, and one of the first questions many K-pop fans ask each other is âwho is your bias?â which is essentially âname your favourite memberâ. There are even stereotypes within each group for fans who bias specific members. Fan culture is centric around groups, so solo artists have to stand out in their packaging and put their brand out there to build a stable fanbase.Â
âBoy Group Cultureâ is also an obvious phenomenon. Boy groups rise to higher levels of fame. Reasons for this may be because boy groups have âfangirlsâ, that is, the majority of their fanbase is women. The trope of a âfangirlâ is well known, even amongst Western artists. One girl group member even remarked that they thought solo release showcases on Korean TV (entertainment companies reserve entire broadcast sections for that group and their release) was only for âprivileged boy groupsâ. All of this may mean that the girls feel they have to show their faces on the album covers to stand out.
This links perfectly into the ridiculous standards for women in K-pop. For women, their appearance has a huge weight on their marketability. Boy group idols have even remarked that they never faced the same pressure as girl group idols to lose weight and look good. An insane amount of money goes into styling for girl groups, so that they look perfect. The plastic surgery industry in Korea is massive. Therefore, girl groups broadcast their âperfectâ appearance on the album cover. Â
However, there is a new trend rising in K-pop – a concept we like to call âgirl crushâ, or the equivalent of âgirl powerâ. These are more powerful concepts for girls, with hard-hitting baselines and more difficult choreography. Itâs perpetuated by many well-known groups such as Blackpink, as well as a rising 4th generation of artists such as ITZY, Cignature and Weki Meki (all bringing a new, electronic sound with interesting harmonic clashes. Interestingly, these clashes are ‘unnatural’, but still sound good and make their way into popular music, which is an obvious statement of ‘I’m unique, and I know it’).Â

The first of the two albums Iâll examine here is one of my personal favourites, as the cover for CLCâs digital single âMeâ released in 2019. It uses clever multi-language wordplay, the English for âmeâ and the Chinese for âmeiâ (which means beautiful) which is the character that is sideways written in the red brushstrokes on the album. Korean lyrics in the chorus translate to âBeautiful meâ. The song itself not only explicit in its lyrics, but also in its sound. Itâs powerful, and the notes donât always work together – but itâs still catchy, and musically complex.Â
The album cover, then, is bold, yet feminine. The strokes of the character, seemingly done in red marker, serve as almost a warning against those who question their âbeautyâ. The fact that itâs in multiple languages illustrates that theyâre confident, that no matter where they go, theyâre beautiful. Itâs tilted horizontally on the side, I think, as a statement. They arenât the norm, they arenât âright side upâ but theyâre still beautiful. The simple âMeâ in all caps is powerful yet simple, and the blank space beside it shows that they donât need anything else but themselves.
The second album cover is also from 2019, from a group called ITZY (pronounced it-zee), and the song âDalla Dallaâ (meaning âdifferentâ in Korean) is all about standing out and being proud of your uniqueness. The bright pink that clashes with the red clothing theyâre wearing only serves to highlight their difference, but also their confidence. Thereâs pink lightning across the cover (girl power, very literally) and the slogan above their name for the title of the album even reads âITâz DIFFERENTâ which combines their group name in a very natural association with their pride to be âdifferentâ.Â
I also find it quite interesting how theyâre sitting on the floor. Usually, camera shorts would be looking UP at them to place the viewer âbelowâ them, creating an image of dominance and power. However, ITZYâs album is not like this. Theyâre rebelling against that, âdifferentâ once again. It also seems as if the viewer is looking down upon them. This might refer to Koreaâs extreme beauty standards, and their confidence is literally âblocking out the hatersâ. Sure, theyâre sitting on the floor, but they look better than you ever will sitting on your floor.Â

The Short Story Medium
What I find particularly special about the short story medium, is that itâs more practical and accessible than a novel, but still fulfils the same purpose as one. I also find that sometimes short stories are much easier to understand than novels are. Perhaps it has something to do with the general lessened attention spans of our generation, so that we can only keep focus for the first 500 words or so, or the fact that we find more short stories online than novels (and our understanding of writing on a screen trumps that of our ability to flip through the pages of a book). Perhaps those two things are related.Â
But I digress.Â
As a (somewhat) aspiring writer, short stories are much easier to wrap my head around structurally than a novel. They not only take less time to write, but also less time to plan and edit. One can still make good use of all the devices within a âwriterâs toolboxâ, structure, narrative, tone, character, yet within 1000 words. This also, however, has the odd effect of adding even more meaning to each word in a capitalist sort of way, since thereâs less of them. Each word counts.Â
And I find that I quite like that.Â
Short stories take less time to analyse than a novel, too. You have the time to swim through the connotations of each and every word. Unlike novels, where there are hundreds of thousands of words to analyse. (This, however, does not take away from the overall meaning and impact of a novel. I respect novelists a great deal, for their patience especially.) But short stories can be infinitely more accessible.
Should a writer be explicit with their purpose?
In my opinion, this defeats the purpose of writing and literature entirely. Itâs proven impossible to tell others what or how to think. Allowing people to create meaning for themselves is proven to be the most effective way of impacting someone. It is the dialogue between a writer and reader that gives the story itâs meaning. Without a reader to interpret it, writing is meaningless.Â
After all, itâs shared thoughts and pure need that created language in the first place. Languageâs inherent nature is in its use – if a word is no longer used, then it loses its meaning (such as the word, âbetwixtâ. Who uses that anymore? Itâs meaning has evaporated from the public consciousness, and may as well be considered lost). And words must be spoken, written or communicated from one person to another, that is how they are used. There needs to be at least two people in order to properly use the word and allow itâs connotations to reach the mind, which is exactly why a writer and a reader both create meaning, together.Â
I have asked many writers at the book launches and forums Iâve been to, âDo you write your story with the intent of what meaning you want to create from the very beginning, or does the story just come out of you?âÂ
And a lot of writers have said that itâs both. They have a vague idea of what they are really saying, but are also invested in telling the story. That is what is important. And all emphasized the importance of readers. Without the reader to give interpretations and to associate connotations, the purpose of the story falls flat. Associating meaning is also a personal task. Those thoughts evoked inside a readerâs mind are what writers aim to create. The reader must create meaning from within their own heads from reading, and the writer facilitates that. The power to evoke thoughts and emotions is what makes writing so powerful.Â
Not all writers know what exact meaning/concept they want to evoke. This is the reason why all of our theses for papers can be different, because thereâs a special subtlety conveyed within each story. Not to mention, everyone would still interpret words in a different way. It would also be extremely boring if a writer just stated, âThis piece is about the inevitability of people extending their judgement on everyone, even themselves,â because that only narrows the piece in its scope, but also removes the aspect of the reader figuring it out themselves, and therefore believing in the story. And even with a sentence like that, people would still find different interpretations, such as focusing on the harshness of the self on, well, the self, or as Marshall has also conveyed, blaming others based on limited evidence. People will naturally interpret things differently, so whatâs the point of trying to be straight up? Allow their minds to run wild. Itâs often a lot more fun that way, and people gain a lot more out of it.Â
And when a reader creates their own meaning, the story becomes so much more believable. The reader gains the added satisfaction of âfiguring it outâ as well as seeing perhaps another universal truth about humanity they had not considered before. Such is the beauty of language.Â
And all Iâm left to wonder, is how humanity can commit such atrocities (genocide, destruction, atom bombs) but manage to create something as complex and beautiful as language, and use it daily. This is the human condition. And this is why we have art in the first place.Â
