Political Cartoon Commentary

This political cartoon portrays a white girl wearing ‘appropriate’ clothes which makes her less possible from being raped. She’s wearing skirts and high heels, and the colors of her clothes are pink and purple. This outfit shows the feminine features and a sense of delicacy and sophistication, which represents the society’s expectations towards females. Besides the character, there are lots of thought bubbles, which are all in question form, questioning herself whether she is wearing appropriate clothes or not, in order to ensure that she would not be raped. The thought bubbles are all around the character, while she looks tiny in the middle. It almost suggests that these thoughts are haunting her down all the time, making her stressed out and couldn’t even breathe. The girl is smiling, which seems irony to me, because behind the happy appearance, she’s struggling with such terrible thoughts. The artist wants to show how women are being pressured in the modern society that they don’t even have the freedom to choose what they want to wear, and how the society blames ‘raping’ on women’s outfits and appearance. She uses realistic style to create this cartoon, because this issue happens frequently around the world, and women can better resonate with this cartoon and easily understand what it is trying to show. Through this cartoon, the artist speaks for women that being raped is not their fault, and is not anything related with what they wear or how they look. She supports women to be free to dress and act as they please. I am also on her side, because I had read an article on the women who had been raped, and the study finds out that most of the time, these women were wearing normal clothes like hoodies and pants when they were being raped. This shows that raping is not related to what they dress at all. I think that the society is just looking for an excuse for the men to rape women, because in many people’s eyes raping is still a normal thing to do in order to satisfy their desire of sex. In their opinion, women are still the possessions of men, which is why they blame it all on women. This shows the social context of the cartoon that everything the artist portrays is based on the modern society, where there’s a power distinction between men and women, and thus even the women as victims are blamed on their tragedies, and they have to always be careful and cautious for not making a single ‘mistake’ that doesn’t meet the expectations of the society. Therefore, I think that historical or social context are crucial to a cartoon because its purpose is always to reflect a certain issue in the modern society.
