Yearbook Reflection 1

I had decided to join Yearbook as an activity since last year when I saw the well-designed yearbook and the cute pictures of my G12 friends there. I think this is a very meaningful activity since I would get involved in other people’s graduation, so that I joined in the yearbook photography group. Photography is actually a COMPLETELY new area for me. I had never even owned a camera or used it properly before, but I always wanted to try it. Therefore, it is a really big challenge for me.

At first, I didn’t even know the functions of the different buttons on camera, and since it was very expensive, I couldn’t just click random buttons, so I frequently asked my leader and group members to teach me. Fortunately, they are all very kind people, and I got lots of help and support from them. I also wasn’t confident to take photos alone, because I was just a beginner, and I was scared that I would mess up the most precious photos for the G12s as they are graduating next year, and they must really appreciate beautiful photos for their last year in UWCSEA. Therefore, I followed the old members in the photography team to learn how to take photos with them in the first few sessions, and I found that they would adjust the lens and light intensity of the camera according to different atmosphere and environment. When I went back, I searched up how to adjust the cameras and how to know which lights would fit each different environment well, and I self learnt the basics online. Then, I borrowed a camera from school and tried my method out under different environments, such as classrooms, playground, sports hall etc. As I had more knowledge about photography, I also became more confident, and thus started to take photos alone. I had taken a few mentor photos until now, and I found a great progress in the quality and sharpness of photos I took, which you can see below.

Yearbook activity really helped me to learn a completely new skill, which I can apply in the future as well. As I become more confident of taking photos, I become more passionate towards this job as well. There are still lots of things to learn, but I think I would overcome these challenges with this strong passion. Therefore, I think it is a very precious learning experience, and I’m really looking forward to take more & better graduation photos for the G12s!
