- Surfaid’s first group session for the year (15th September)
During my time so far, as chair of Surfaid, I have discovered the roots of Surfaid, and our GC’s key initiatives. Throughout this first month, I have started to plan and organize weekly sessions (with Mr.Jeferriss) to encourage old students, and educate new members of the GC on what we do. Throughout this first month, I have prepared a speech for different grade levels in high school and performed this pitch as an invitation to join the GC through the virtual service fair event. This happened to be very successful, as Surfaid then proceeded to receive many applications, in fact, over the maximum number of members. This was a huge success for us, as more members simply means we can do things quicker, more efficiently, and thus, as a result, carry out more work in the year.
During this time, with our first group session being today (15th Sept), I created a welcome presentation for all members of our GC for the upcoming year. This discussed everything, from the main objectives, to surfaid projects, and to our new goals for the year.
LO4 [Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences] – I have demonstrated this learning objective through planning, and putting in effort in order to produce output and the best result, all in advance of our sessions which started today. I foresee many challenges in the future, especially with the possibility that our main event, Swimdonesia, may not run this year due to covid-19, which has presented with another great challenge. I have a large passion for Surfaid, and what the international NGO does to help rural folks in remote areas by not only providing tools, but also educating self-reliance in order for villages to sustain after the surfaid project is finished. This passion that I have has a positive relationship with my motivation to do better, I want to bring change to the GC and I am committed to doing whatever I can to bring real change for the better, though we are going through very tough times, the rural villagers with limited access to resources are going through the same as us.
LO6 [Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance] – Not only being a member of Surfaid for the last 2 years, but now, as chair- I am continueing to learn all about surfaid’s missions and roles in various islands. What they do is very beneficial to increasing villagers wellbeing. This is a very significant issue that our world faces today, through poverty, which leads to unhygenic environments and water, and secondly, a lack of awareness exposure to those in that condition. These remote villagers have found a way of life, Surfaid both acknowledges that, and builds on it- instead of simply teaching them how they should live. Our impacts of fundraising and awareness in UWC has done played a large part for fundraising for the mother and child program in the Nias island. Our thinking here at Surfaid is to spread both awareness, and raise funds through sustainible practices in order to support different Surfaid projects. Something that may be beneficial, in the near future, could be continueing to organise a trip so that members of our GC can go down and see what impact we’ve had on the community, and what Surfaid is currently doing; as well as help out.
LO4- Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences. LO6- Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
