According to new Google research, teens think Google is cool—sorry, “lit”
Recently, the Brand Team for Consumer Apps at Google or BTFCAAG conducted a survey asking 1100 teenagers to rank 122 brands based on how familiar they were with them and how ‘cool’ they were. Whilst youtube, Netflix and Google were the top three picks, both in terms of awareness and coolness, the wall street journal and WhatsApp both received the boot.
As a teenager myself, how much do I agree with the overall results? Well, the answer to that is, not much at all, my choices being very much ‘retro’, the complete opposite of the mainstream. For instance, I would put ‘uncool’ brands such as the Wall Street Journal over a ‘cool’ brand such as Netflix. This might be because of my utilitarian mindset, where browsing the Wall Street Journal which has information on topics such as economics will provide me with greater utility then watching a tv show on Netflix.
Another example of me straying away from the mainstream would be my opinion of snap chat. While the survey shows how teenagers find the application very important, I am of the opinion that it is actually a waste of time and is pretty useless. One reason I think like this is my upbringing, with my parents always being big supporters of restricting access to social media and technology in general, a result of their own conservative upbringing. As a result, I grew up without social media and to this day, distance myself from it.
However, while I do consider myself independent of popular culture, that doesn’t mean I do not agree with certain aspects of it. Opinions such as Google is in the top three rated brands is something I certainly agree with supporting the statement, “Google is not only a powerful search engine but great at everything it does, from email to documents.” made by a 17-year-old from Florida. Another opinion I do agree with is Spotify, which does have a high rating. This is due to using the application daily, listening to music on the bus every day, to and from school.
Overall, I believe that I am certainly not one that follows trends and leans towards brands that are considered cool by the rest of my age groups. However, at the same time, this does not stop me from agreeing with them at times. That’s my opinion as a self-certified teenager, what about yours?
This is so good Akshat! It’s so formal and detailed. Perhaps include some more of your opinions on other brands.
I really liked the way that you have analysed your habits & interests and reflected on how that has influenced your view on this article.
Maybe you can elaborate on what has impacted you to feel that you are not ‘mainstream’, and talk more about what changed your interests.
I really liked this response, good job!
I find it interesting how you mentioned that snapchat is “a waste of time and is pretty useless” I actually kind of agree with you, since snapchat doesn’t actually help with anything productive, but I do think that being “useless” works in snapchats favour, and isn’t a negative point. I feel like people actually like snapchat not because they think it is useful, but because it is useless. (in terms of learning stuff or working) It sounds a bit silly, but sometimes it’s nice to spend time doing something that isn’t productive because you don’t really have to worry about snapchatting well or getting all your snapchat done or whatever. I really like how you went in depth about your opinions on the article instead of just a couple of sentences abotu your general views of the topic as well.
