This year, I have really enjoyed my role as chair in 7oaks. I believe it is a major highlight of my leadership as a person, as I am able to take part in this service that I am genuinely passionate about and enjoy doing, whilst helping other students in the younger grades also gain a passion for it. My service currently focuses on working with younger, less fortunate children, in a childcare centre, and playing games and reading books to them. As I thoroughly enjoy spending time with children, I was very glad to get selected as chair for this service, and I believe I have been able to make many positive contributions to improving it. I feel by making the service planning sessions more personal and less like a class, me and my service members are able to collaborate more and have more open discussions on the ideas, allowing us to brainstorm ones that are more creative and of higher quality. This experience has been important in increasing my self-confidence and making me feel more comfortable in taking up a leadership role and having this experience before going to college.
Some things that I wish to improve on before passing my chair role onto someone else next year are hopefully the passion for the service and attendance rate. I feel that though there are many students who participate in sessions and help us plan them, come up with ideas and make it overall more collaborative, we as chairs still have been playing too large of a role in planning the sessions ourselves instead of just mainly being involved in the organisation aspect. Some students do not participate as much, and often don’t show up for lessons, and I hope to improve this by making sessions more enjoyable and showing how helping support children in low income families can be beneficial for them too.
