How Was The Importance Of Being Earnest Humors

The Importance Of Being Earnest is a hilarious play, written by Oscar Wilde. One thing which makes the play humorous is the fact that Oscar Wilde added speeches which are so offensive, that they are funny. For example, on page 313, Earnest complains to Algernon for having no way of behaving to a woman. As a response, Algernon said, “The only way to behave to a woman is to make love to her if she is pretty and to someone else if she is plain.” No one would ever imagen someone saying something as offensive as this to somebody else. The fact that he did makes it funny.

Another thing that makes this play humorous is that it includes very unexpected responses. For example, in page 310, when Lady Bracknell was interrogating Earnest to see whether he was fit to marry her daughter. She asks him whether his parents are still alive, to which Earnest answers by saying they both died. As a response, Lady Bracknell said “to loose one parent may be regarded as a misfortune; to loose both looks like carelessness.” Normally, one would offer their condolences and show some empathy in a situation like this, especially during the Victorian period where people were supposed to be ‘proper’. No one would have ever thought to respond like this. This response, is one of the many quotes within the play which is so unusual, and unexpected that it is funny.
