1) 3-5 quotes I found interesting
“I can barely figure out where to put my name on a tax form.”
“We will never replace words with pictures. People run out of symbols.”
“The stickers and the emojis were a different experience. They were fuller.”
“It appeals to a teenage range of emotions.”
2) How did the episode use conventions?
The episodes used conventions in a fairly traditional way. It started off with an introduction to the program, followed by introductions to the people and the challenge. It when went into their experiences, brought in an expert, recalled an anecdote, brought in another expert, before concluding with a reflection and an outro (including shownotes). This made the episode feel professionally edited and put together, smooth and pleasant to listen to, and easy to comprehend.
3) How has the episode helped me pick a challenge to try out?
If anything, this episode has reinforced the fact that I don’t want to attempt any of the challenges that change the way I text. They say that it’s pretty challenging to communicate regular messages, and that emojis only really come into their own when doing the affectionate stuff. I never send affectionate messages and am always matter-of-fact about things, so using emojis would make it nigh on impossible for me to text on a daily basis. This also applies for challenges such as the audio/video one, and handwriting letters.
4) 2-3 questions I have after thinking about this episode
Would altering the way two people communicate change their relationship? Would it be for better or worse?
What is the maximum number of emojis we can create? When will we run out?
What is the maximum amount of time a person can do this for before having to revert to text?
I think the most important quote you highlighted was “The stickers and the emojis were a different experience. They were fuller.” I say this because it highlights problems that people have with not being expressive enough in their word choices. It is also interesting since the range of emotions and scenarios that stickers can actually describe is quite narrow, but they felt fuller than words.
The question that most interests me is “Would altering the way two people communicate change their relationship? Would it be for better or worse?” I say this because it explores the different styles of texting that individuals with different personalities have. For shy individuals emojis can help communicate more effectively, but for more descriptive personalities, limiting their communication to only emojis is a burden.
I think the most important quote you highlighted was“We will never replace words with pictures. People run out of symbols.” I say this because that’s a big problem when we use emoji for texting.
The question that most interests me is “What is the maximum amount of time a person can do this for before having to revert to text?” I say this because most people are difficult to revert in a short time.
The most important quote is “It appeals to a teenage range of emotions.”
And my favorite question was What is the maximum amount of time a person can do this for before having to revert to text?.
