To prepare for the World of Learning week, we conducted mock interviews in class with us posing as applicants for the position we are going to be undertaking. My interview was conducted by Mr. Graham Silverthorne, head of UWCSEA East. For the most part, I think the interview went pretty well. I was able to get most of my points across in a way which was hopefully easy to understand. Mr. Silverthorne echoed this feedback, saying that one thing I did especially well was balancing talking about my school/work and more human aspects. However, he did point out two areas for improvement, the first being my tone. I got all my points across, but he said that the manner in which I said them was a bit intense and that being slightly more casual would make the interviewer feel more comfortable too. He said that this could be remedied simply by smiling more, since that eases some of the pre-existing tensions. The second area for improvement was the amount I talked, with Mr. Silverthorne pointed out that my answers were a bit too long at times. Granted, the interview was only three minutes, and actual interviews would be much longer and would allow more scope for conversation, but trying to be a bit more concise is a skill everyone should aim to have. Overall, I’d say that this was an important experience that will hopefully pay its dues in the future.
