Reflection of sustainable life

After the client interview, we knew that our client——Ms. Jones is already a sustainable person, but she still got some problems about food waste management and fly travel, and we need to search more useful information to help her cause this can make a big difference to the ecological footprint.

Our client and her family loves travel so they travel a lot during the vacation, and she likes to drink coffee but can’t finish it almost every time, and if the salad is not fresh she would waste them.So we focus on the two parts and we are going to give her some suggestions about how to fly sustainable, how to store food in the fridge to keep salad fresh and how to recycle coffee grounds. After we done searching, we will be thinking about how to give the methods clearly to our client so it can be effective.

Here is my notes for the recording above:

Do we worry too much about the effects technology has on our lives?

Technology makes our life much more convenient. I think that the benefits of technology to people outweigh the disadvantages. When people use technology in an incorrect way, there will be some bad influences. But in fact, technology brings a lot of advantages to our Life, and this is a point that has to be confirmed. Some people are addicted to technology, such as their mobile phones and computers, but this is a very small chance that won’t happen to everyone that use them. Technology is the improvement of our quality of life and the development of the times.

Final Podcast Round Up

Which three quotes from here link with your experience in the podcast project? What makes you say so? How is this useful fro you as we enter the last three months of the year?

  1. “your talent and your intelligence don’t play nearly as big of a role as you might think. The research studies that I have found say that intelligence only accounts for 30% of your achievement — and that’s at the extreme upper end.”
  2. “It wasn’t strength or smarts or leadership potential that accurately predicted whether or not a cadet would finish Beast Barracks. Instead, it was grit — the perseverance and passion to achieve long–term goals — that made the difference.
  3. “Mental toughness is like a muscle. It needs to be worked to grow and develop. If you haven’t pushed yourself in thousands of small ways, of course you’ll wilt when things get really difficult.”

From this article, I learned that talent is not the most important thing. Although many people think that talent is the leader of what they want to do, if they have no talents and skills, they cannot succeed on their own. But this article puts forward the opposite theory, that the effort (Mental Toughness) is not worse than the talent. When I was doing Dper project this time, I had a lot of places that I found difficult to do. For example, I didn’t know how to make the intro and outro music for introducing me and my partner, but through my efforts plus friends’ help,I still finished the music producing. Beside this,  I didn’t know how to write show notes, I only know that I need to put all kinds of links that we used during the project,  I stayed on the show notes for a while. But after a period of reference and learning, I also completed this task. It is useful because it always makes me confident and doesn’t give up what I can’t do.

As you listen to your partner agreement responses, where do you think you should have thought more about collaboration? Which pieces of advice could you have thought more deeply about and why? Now that you’ve worked with different partners, what is it that you MOST need from a partner during a project and how do you know?

I think that in addition to seeing the final results, the process of cooperation between me and my partners is also very important. In the course of this cooperation, I found that there was not enough communication between us. Although we are all boarders, we can not discuss the details about dper’s homework every time we met. Although we have set up a plan to help us complete the work, but if the time was disrupted, I would  forget about the audio recording one day. I believe that if the communication between us could improve, the task should be more efficient and faster. But in general, my partner and I are very responsible and very cooperative about this topic.

Which part of the tool (see below) was the sharpest for you in this project? Which part do you think you need to spend more time using and why? How would using that tool have helped with this project?

I think for me, through this project, I am more open to others, and “others” can refer to my classmates and my family. For family part,  it’s because the theme of this challenge is to use voice chat (audio recording) but not typing to chat with my family. When I use voice chat, the emotions and inner thoughts that I spoke will be communicated to my parents at the first time instead of thinking twice about it after I finished typing. I don’t have much time to think, and my family they also use voice chat to chat with me and they are happy to do so. As for the relationship between me and my classmates, cause I had many questions that I did not know how to do, after I found there was a question that I couldn’t understand I would go  to my classmates to find help, and they were willing to help me. My partner and I also cooperate very well in this project, so I feel that I am more open to others and the distance between people is closer.

Thank you for reading, have a nice day.

Show notes

For the challenge choosing, we chose “Every day send one 2-3 minute voice recording to a friend/family member who lives outside of Singapore” from the Challenge lists.Base on this, me and my partner had a buddy conversation to get to know each other and learn more details that can help us work better together. To finish the challenge, here is our Planner for helping us to put our audios everyday. Before the task, I read a show notes from others, and you can see the details of my understanding from Doris’s reflection. For introducing the challenge better, me and my partner Gwenda did two Intro and Outro music.

After the Challenge week, we need to relate the challenge with 4 threads:

Here are the 4 threads we have answered:

  • How did your challenge remind you of the 16 things to stop doing? Which one in particular and why?
  • How did your experience with the challenge confirm or reject any of the findings here?
  • Would you recommend this challenge to others, why or why not?
  • Do you control your technology or does your technology control you?

Here is the Final Podcast, it can show you the final product.

Thank you for your reading 😛

Podcast Buddy Challenge

Hi everyone!

Me and my partner Gwenda chose to do the technology challenge about “everyday send one 2-3 minutes voice recording to a friend/family member who lives outside of Singapore” for five days.

This  is me and my partner’s project planner.

This is the process about my intro music.

This is my Outro music and it shows the Garageband track.

This  is the show notes for me and my partner.

Stop motion reflection

Reflection

Self-management– We think the most challenging thing for us is time management, we sometimes couldn’t follow our plan. One is because we have a different schedule, another is that we always have a new idea but don’t have the equipment to help us finish.  We failed at organizing materials effectively, First, we considered about using a puppet. We made an anime puppet which can wave its hands, but the problem is that we cannot find a suitable background board, even we find it, it couldn’t be big enough. Then, we tried to act by ourselves, one of us would move slowly, and another would take photos. But it was still difficult to make a good atmosphere, for example, if we turn off the light, the room would be too dark to take photos… we faced many problems, however, we solved them in the end. When we were hesitant about animation and people acting, we decided to merge them. One thing important that we can keep an optimistic mindset.

Collaboration– I think we did well on collaboration, we always have clear divisions of responsibilities, if one of us has a new idea, we would discuss it together and compare it with the old idea. If someone finished her things first, she would help another person. We encouraged each other when it was necessary and we were patient all the time. We discussed our video face to face because both of us are boarders, we always have time to make our product more perfect. We seldom had disagreement because we would compromise before quarrel.

Communication– Before we start to record the film, we had discussion time first, but if another person could not understand, we would draw down our thoughts to explain. When one is speaking, another would listen carefully,  after she finished, the listener would share her idea because we could never know whose idea is better. Here is an example: when we were choosing music, both of us have our own idea, we had a topic about the BGM but there are so many kinds of music. So we listened to others’ music, then found out the best one. We did not have any problem in language or express our ideas.

Partner Agreement

Gloria: Doris is a good partner, I really enjoy the time working with her.

Doris: We worked really well, I think we did a wonderful job. But for the efficient part, we can still improve a lot.

We should be active listener and be patient when we are doing our work. We need to be friendly with our partner, for example, we shouldn’t quarrel with each other because of some small disagreement.

Anyway, this is a very good opportunity to understand each other deeply and it is also a very good experience for us to learn more things,  and how to better communicate with people. Wish we can work together again in the future!

Reflection

1.Include 3-5 quotes from the episode that you found interesting.

-“Phenomenon number two is: we love freaking out about the internet. There is, again, every week, “Oh look, something terrible happened on the internet.” So I think both of those are real ingredients in why there’s a backlash.”

People is interested in something bad that happened in real life but show on the internet. Also the quotes shows the Internet can spread news efficiently and correctly.

-“Social media is no more likely to make young people feel depressed, less confident, less popular, or worse about themselves in 2018 than it was in 2012, according to our brand new research.”

Social media can help teenagers build their confident, it is truth that they can find happiness through the Internet, not only bad thing can be learnt online.Sometimes teenagers can feel themselves more on the Internet. From the time, we can find that follow the time, technology developed fast and have more positive effects for people who use electronics.

-“But one thing I wanted to get to was parents’ role in device addiction, if we want to call it that, which is parents are actually using devices just as much as teens are, and so, I think role modeling is a really important factor here. If we want our teens to have more face-to-face conversations and be on their phones less, then we need to model that behavior ourselves.”

Leading by example play a important role for parents if they want their child to be far away from the electronics, there is almost no influence for children if parent in device addiction.
2.How the episode used the conventions and to what effect?

They add the preview that introduce the topic and the main theme about what’s going on and they have the music before they have formal conversation, it gives readers a good atmosphere and bring interest to readers and let them want to keep reading. Also there is BGM through all the episode. Not only music but also the standard introduction of the narrators themselves. They have enough information, such as news, data, guest and someone’s experience. At the end, after they finish their conversation they said goodbye and thank you for listening and reading, there are many links for the information details, readers can learn more from the links included in the episode.
3.What about this episode helps you pick the challenge to try out?

I know more details about the social media, such as the advantages and disadvantages about it.If I try the challenge about social media I might learn and understand more about the episode, I can have the experience just like the narrators in the episode said.

4.What new questions do you have as the result of thinking about this episode? (list 2-3)

-“A lot of parents I think don’t understand what’s happening on social media, don’t understand what their teens are doing on their devices, and so they have this really sort of antagonistic relationship. They’re like, “Get off your phone!” You know? It’s like, “Get off my lawn!” And so, I think that that’s really a mistake, and that’s something that can actually cause a weakening of the relationship between parent and teen, which is the last thing you want as the parent of a teenager.”

Why can’t parents understand what’s happening on social media? They always use social media in their daily life.

Parents use social media more than children but why parents still can’t understand their child ?

Parents actually know the benefits of using social media but why they still don’t let their children use it?

Respiration

From the lesson:

  • Respiration is the release of energy in cells by the breakdown of food substances.
  • C6H12O6+6O2——6CO2+6H2O (glucose + oxygen——carbon dioxide + water).
  • Cells need and use the energy that is formed through this process to assist with life processes in order for organisms to survive and reproduce.

I did task 2 with Gloria and we used glucose and hot water to show the respiration. Here are the steps for the experiment.

  1. Get a syringe, and put some liquid food in it.
  2. Cover it with clay, make sure there won’t be oxygen get in during the experiment.
  3. Get an empty tube.
  4. Put syringe into the empty tube straightly with clay in the button.
  5. Fill the tube with hot water.
  6. Observe what is happening in the tube

In the end, we saw there were bubbles coming out of the syringe and the water filled in the syringe so the number decreased from 3 to 4.

We can see that the glucose and oxygen created water and carbon dioxide:

C6H12O6+6O2——6CO2+6H2O

SWOT analysis

This time we went to Bintan Island. The main task of our group was to teach the students there,  let them know the importance of protecting the environment , how to protect the environment, and improve their English vocabulary during the class. We focus on sea surface pollution, for example, oil and plastic bags floating on the ocean. We created a fairy tale book by using the protection of the dugong as an example, telling the story of the little boy Ishraq and the dugong, and using this story to caused students to think.
We have prepared a few games: mapping game, matching games, reading fairy tales, letting them create characters to demonstrate how to protect the environment,  whiteboard games (students line up, write down ideas on the whiteboard to protect the environment), end this lesson with the discussion.

After the class, the Island foundation gave us some opportunities that can help us develop our class in a better way: we can improve our dugong activities-develop into system mapping with “WHY?”,the reflection game part can be developed, we can change the group students, tourism can be debated into higher thinking, and we can bring more information to our fairytale story book, lead students to the whole world and give them time to have discussion.

On the Thursday morning, one of the Island Foundation members told us to change the “environment” topic into “food”, for example: What do you eat for breakfast/lunch/dinner?  We even made a simple song for the different food, and turned the dugong matching game into food matching game.

We did quite good this time, all content was connected to a local environmental issue and traditional culture, most activities develop 21st-century critical thinking and collaboration skills as well as students confidence, we had discussion time for each students and they all had chances to show what they have learnt from that lesson.I learnt a lot from this experience, team-work played a important role in this project, we all have individual work to do and the division of labor is very clear and detailed, our team members worked hard and patient. Through this experience, I have learned a lot about the importance of protecting the environment from our “environmental protection” theme. Although we are teaching the lectures to children, I have learned a lot from them. If I find some social problems in the future, I will know how to find solutions or mitigation methods, such as: go to a professional organization, interview them and make notes, learn from their words and develop my own thoughts. I will interview people who has relation with the social issues, do social survey visits, and get relevant information to better understand the reasons for these problems.

Gpers reflection

1. What is the best way to teach children how to develop a lesson plan and presentation for the Island Foundation?

Communication between children and teachers is very important, they can exchange different ideas through conversation. Children only need to pay attention to this topic for 10-15 minutes, so we need to divide the course into sections, each with a different theme. Use this method to get the attention of the children. In addition, for example, when the child begins to lose focus, the teacher can clap his hands and wait for the student to clap back, but it is best not to use the word “no” to stop the student’s actions, which will make the children have a counterattack, thus losing classroom order.

2. What is the connection between Piaget’s cognitive development theory and/or Vygotsky’s social learning theory and the way you build the course? Think about what you are doing in integrated humanities science.

I know that children can accept and think more and different things than adults in their minds. These ideas are more distinctive and characteristic. They can learn from different positions from their own theories. So we can build our curriculum ideas based on their theory. Follow the children’s ideas and adapt some content to build our own content to attract students’ attention. We will have more than 10 minutes class discussions for students to share their thoughts . They can also listen to other children’s suggestions and integrate their opinions to better understand the content of the class.

3. Why is this learning method important to meeting the development needs of Indonesia?

When we go to class, the main stage is primary school students. For younger students, their focus is on 10 to 15 minutes, so we can separate the different projects and attract the attention of the students in different ways so that we can get better teaching results. Our topic is “protecting the environment”. We interviewed local villagers and got some knowledge about the environment of Bintan Island. Combined with their culture, the classroom will be more vivid for local students, and they will feel even more familiar with the topic.
