This advertisement comes for a real estate company by the name of “Marsh & Parsons” in 2017. The advertisement projects a bold image of an old man and a young woman posing enticingly. The couple is dressed in their finest apparel to represent the class of the property being sold. The text displayed below the image reads “A charming period property with a modern extension”. Through this, the audience learns that the elderly man in the image is meant to represent ‘a charming period property’ and the young woman; the ‘modern extension’. However, this ad can easily be seen to represent the old fashioned concept of women being decorative addendums to men. Moreover, the UK has historically faced backlash on certain bills that restrict women’s’ rights to buy property, this ad draws similarities to certain sexist notions on a women’s place in society used to devise these bills. Though the advertisement is conceptually valid, had the genders been reversed, it may have been recieved better.
