A key strength that I believe I can bring to my service is the fact that I am confident with entertaining and educating younger children. This is because I have grown up with many younger relatives that I have been charged with looking after. Additionally, this is a job that I am not only confident in but also enjoy, thus I can bring excitement and a good mind set to the service group. Furthermore I believe an additional strength that I have is the fact that I enjoy being creative, in particular I enjoy drama, which is a main concept we are trying to incorporate into our service. I think this will be a good strength for my service because it allows me to contribute ideas that we could do, especially drama games that will grow the kids confidence, which is key because confidence in not only important in drama but also important concept and area to develop in children as it allows for them to build social skills outside their normal social situations. An area I believe we have room to grow in our service, is our own confidence in teaching skills. Being young ourselves many of us have not had many opportunities to take 15 children under our control, therefore, I believe we need to interview and investigate successful teaching skills that will help us with this challenge.
So throughout these last 7 weeks in IB, I found out a quite a lot about myself and my personality. For example, I have realise in order to get thing completed I need to write it down in some sort of ‘To Do ‘ list fashion and plan in advance what day I will do it on. This technique has helped a lot this year already as I have taken up many activities resulting in a lot of extra commitments especially in sports. Therefore with this I can plan out which days I feel less tired on therefore allowing me to complete more homework to the best of my ability. I have also found that this year I am more dedicated to not only school but also in a social aspect, I think this is because I am now more confident in this school than I was last year being a new student.
This week we had our first service meeting. We discovered that we will be working with lower income families in Singapore, specifically younger children attending 4PM. 4PM is a group that helps young children in lower income family have affordable access to education. Their motto is ‘Maximising Human Potential for the Future of the Community’. In our first meeting we created questions regarding the overall issues that face lower income families in Singapore and then additionally questions we had for the 4PM group. We then organised the questions into MISO (Media, Interviews , surveys, observations) so we had an understanding what platform we could use to help seek answers to our questions.
