Drama Exam Reflection

Monologues

  • A chosen individual performance piece to the rest of the class
  • A scripted piece
  • 3-5 minutes

Building up to the performance I was quite scared because I have not done drama before I had never done anything like this before and I didn’t know what to expect, but when I actually performed I felt a lot better about it. Afterwards, there was such a feeling of relief that it was over and we had all made it.

I learnt a lot from the monologues, mostly just about how to block and perform a piece of drama, This was my first scripted piece if drama that I have done so I haven’t tried to remember lines before either, I eventually got there and I think that I got them all right in the actual performance.

Monologue Reflection

  • What worked well in the rehearsal process?I memorised my lines much better than I thought I would. I started soon after we were assigned the task. I chose the monologue I wanted and then recorded myself reading it and listened to it about 30 times while I was running, cycling and doing other activities. When it came time to actually memorise the script I then found it much easier because I was so familiar with it.
  • What was challenging? How did you solve the problem?Because my script was more like a speech the movements weren’t obvious to me. I had to think of what movements were appropriate to the words. Ms Parr really helped with this. She said I needed to use the space but do it with a purpose, and without pacing. With Ms Parr’s suggestions and suggestions from other students, I was able to solve the problem.
  • Think back on some key learning? Why might have the monologue been important to you?The monologue itself wasn’t so important to me but the experience was. This was the first time for me to learn lines, the first time doing a solo performance … actually, the first time that I have performed any part of a play! I enjoyed the experience and it was great to see how good everyone else was.
  • List 2 or 3 things you intend to do with the skills or knowledge required todayThe memorising skills I’ve practised will be useful for future plays. It’s also good to have the confidence to know how to think on my feet (say, if I forget a line), Learning how to act is useful to so many parts of everyday life, for example, if I need to give a speech, or thinking what to say in a job interview.

Drama Reflection

EXPLORATION AND EXPERIMENTATION

Through exploration and experimentation, you are able to expand their awareness of the skills, techniques and processes available to them in the creation of drama.

Intentional Reflection- List two or three things you intend to do with the skills you have acquired or the discoveries you have made. List two or three areas that you want to research or examine further.

I have learned that one prop can be used to represent many different things depending on how you use it and move it. I think that I could definitely expand on my dramatic ability but we did not have much time in this unit

COLLABORATION

Effective collaborative skills enhance the creative potential of the performance/presentation of drama.

Evaluative Reflection- What worked well? What was challenging? How did you solve the problem? What did this teach you?

We did work well as a group an our final performance represented this but we did have a little git of trouble generating ideas and maybe we could have had some more ideas suggested more evenly by all the members of the group

APPLICATION OF SKILLS

The application of specific skills, dramatic techniques and processes is necessary in the creation of imaginative and innovative performances and presentation/s.

Retrospective Reflection- Think back to some key learning you have had in the class. Why do you think it was so significant for you?

Small actions done with purpose and in synchrony can be much more powerful than overdone movements out of time. This was important for me because I had always originally tried to overdo my actions and it didn’t portray the right message.

Action Points- List things to remember for the future or things to do next. Treat this as artistic advice to your future self from your present self.

Small but powerful actions > big and comedic

Maybe focus on dramatic talent while presenting

think about all aspects:

light

music

one good prop used correctly can be powerful

think about the position of the audience

how much does the audience understand?
