- 1/10/20 Tech Rehearsal
These past few weeks, I’ve been going to my rehearsals for CultuRama. I think I noticed many things in these sessions. One is that, though I had joined the same country’s dance as last year’s CultuRama, the style of dancing very different to some that I was used to and accustomed to. This allowed me to be more creative and experience different dance styles within this culture. I think I was able to learn more about my own culture here and learn how I can get out of my own comfort zone and challenge myself to create a unique performance.
Another thing I noticed throughout the rehearsals was how important effective communication can be when leading a group. Both my dance leaders do not have English as their first language, however, they were able to really effectively communicate their thoughts to us through body language and facial expressions. Through this, I realised how important these things are and I realised that I want to implement this in my own future leadership experiences to better communicate my messages. It was something I didn’t even realise the importance of, and I’m glad that this language barrier taught me this. Additionally, teamwork and hard work was something I realised was really critical in a dance performance for the dancers to be in synch and look well organised on stage so I’m really glad we were able to work on this, and we were able to be effective as a team.
Lastly, I noticed that dancing was a lot harder than I anticipated it to be. I always knew that I’m not a natural dancer so this would be slightly difficult but learning the choreography quickly and practising it in the short time we had was difficult, but I realised that I needed to time manage to give myself some time outside of rehearsals to also practise the dance and perfect it. It was also a lot more tiring than I expected and it was a good form of exercise for me, especially through some of the longer light plots and tech rehearsals we’ve had so far. I think I’ve been able to work towards some of the goals I set for myself at the beginning of the process to keep up with the dancing, manage my time effectively and learn a new skill. The rehearsals are going great and I hope the final performance reflects this.
