Project Week Initial Reflection

For project week, I am going to TRCRC, an organization based in Malaysia aiming to restore the rainforest that has been damaged throughout the years in Borneo and other locations. The location I am travelling to is Merisuli Sabah, one of its locations in Borneo.

The learning outcomes I aim to achieve on this trip are LO6 Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance. LO3 Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience. and LO2 Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

LO3 Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.

My trip is significant to me as it ties in closely with the school expedition I chose to go on in Grade 9 to Danau Girang Field Centre in Borneo. The location of Merisuli and the field centre is very close, and the climate and environment is very much similar. However, the main difference between these organizations is that TRCRC focuses on rainforest restoration (ie. tree planting and nursing) while Danau Girang focuses on protecting wildlife living in the rainforest. Through hands on investigation of all the aspects of the Borneo rainforest, I will have a more in depth understanding of the aspects of rainforest conservation and restoration. I am also able to bring knowledge from before to here. Another difference in this CAS experience is that the communication and planning had to be done by us, instead of the teachers. By doing research by myself, I demonstrated how I initiate and plan this CAS experience.

LO6 Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Rainforest restoration is an issue of global significance. By learning how organizations in South East Asia operate to accomplish this goal, I can potentially apply this knowledge to other locations in the world that suffers from loss of habitat in rainforests.

LO2 Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

Planning a trip on our own is a very challenging process. We have to take into account everything from food to transportation. And all the details must be planned carefully to achieve the maximum potential of this trip.

Term 3 Apex Harmony Lodge Reflection

In term 3 of apex harmony lodge, we worked on portfolios that improved out learning of working with the residents as well as going to visit the residents themselves.

Leaning Outcome 3 Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.

I demonstrated this learning outcome by showing my understanding of this service in my writing of portfolio posts and how I will take this experience further. I also demonstrated my understanding of my the things I do in my service and how this helps the residents as well as the community.

LO 1 Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.

To write these, our service split into two groups working on different projects. I worked on doing more background research on Apex as well as using music to alleviate symptoms of dementia. I identified my strengths in doing research with reliable sources from research papers as well as formulating it into a write up that can be available for everyone.

EE Day Reflection

One thing Ive learned.

Something I learned about today is how to write personal engagement. With 5 areas you can connect to: culture, family, history, language, and religion, I can relate my personal engagement with the specific topic I am researching about. As it is 6 marks of the essay, I must show why I want to write about this topic and how this topic relates to me in depth, not just that I was interested in it.

What I’m proud of

I am proud of starting to write my essay with the introduction containing my personal engagement and the background of the research question. It has become my first step in my extended essay progress.

What else do I need to do next.

I need to continue my research on quantum algorithms and whether it is feasible to predict a trend and where I can expect a relationship between the input value and an element of the output value. I also have to further my understanding of quantum circuits as a mathematical model so I can understand the algorithms I come in contact with better.

Term 3 Jazz Band

In term 3 the main focus of the Jazz Band was to prepare for our concert, From All Corners. We learned the pieces Flute Salad and Nice Work If You Can Get It.

LO5-Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively.

In Nice Work if You can Get It, there was a vocal feature of one of the music students. Playing a piece with a vocal feature is different from playing normally as the human voice is much quieter than the volume of instruments playing in the band. Controlling dynamics by collaboration was a skill that I had to further develop to make the performance successful.

Term 3 Tabitha Reflection

In term 3 of Tabitha GC, we planned and executed events for Aida and the Family Festival. For Aida we sold baked products before the show and during the intermission. For the family festival, we raised money by selling swimsuits donated by a parent owned company.

LO3-Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.

The planning of these projects take a long time. I participated in planning the sales, communicating with the organizers. Our project week planning required research in the service partners as well as activities we would do there.

LO5-Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively.

At the Aida sale, I served many roles in preparing and selling. During the intermission as many people were coming to buy, I took on the organizing role and formed a system where the customers takes order at one session and then pay at the end of the line. This method sped up the process a lot and we were able to make a lot more money.

LO6-Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.

For the family festival, we raised money for women and children in Cambodia. The money we made directly went to their house building funds, providing them with housing and shelter. We also learned about the Khmer Rouge and the effects of their regime on the people of Cambodia.

Term 2 Jazz Combo

In Jazz Combo I continued to hone my skills in improvising and playing in small groups by playing new pieces. I learned a new piece “Just the Two of Us” and being able to solo on it.

LO1-Identify their own strengths and develop areas for growth.

With continuing in this service, I identified that I have strengths in following the sheet music and playing together with my small group. Something I need to work on is the different scales from the sheet music for soloing. As I haven’t learned music theory before, it is difficult for me to identify the right scale to follow in my solo.

Term 2 U19 Basketball B team

To show how my skills in basketball developed through the pre-season basketball last term, I tried out for the school team. I made the B team.

LO2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

I attended every practice on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in order to develop my skills in basketball. I used the skills I developed in games with other schools. Practice was tough, often with a lot of stamina training, but I pushed myself to do everything the coach asked me to do. Unfortunately, we didn’t win in the league, but next year I will improve and play better.

LO5-Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively.

As basketball is a team sport, working with your teammates is very important. On our team, I knew some players but others were strangers. It took time to get used to playing with everyone as a team, but we proved to be most successful when we played together.

Term 2 Apex Harmony Lodge

In term 2 we continued our service at the Apex Harmony Lodge. I deepened my relationship with my resident, and I got to know him better personally as well as his music tastes.

LO2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Along with how I developed my relationship with him, I developed my skills in communication too. Learning what to say, how to treat him, especially when he is frustrated or angry is something that was hard for me in the beginning. There are many factors to their mood. Dementia causes him to think about things such as stress from work, problems with money and healthcare among many other things. As during this period of time, the lodge is undergoing heavy construction. Calming the resident with music and talking to them helps them to relax more.

LO4-Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences. Students can articulate the stages from conceiving an idea to executing a plan for a CAS experience or series of CAS experiences.

This service is something I am very committed to. I am committed to this service because it has a direct impact on the residents in Apex Harmony Lodge. If I don’t show up, they will be the ones who suffer. Because I signed up for this service, it is my obligation to carry this towards the end and not let others suffer from the consequences of my actions.

Term 2 Jazz Band Reflection

In term 2 we performed our 3 prepared songs on stage at the Wavelength concert. The songs included Birdland, Little Darlin, and a self written piece by a student in the music department. These pieces require different techniques to play, as they are very different in tone and rhythm.

Learning outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Shifting from a high intensity piece, that of Birdland, to a soft and slow piece is a challenging feat. A high amount of control and precision is needed to make the transition and stay within the boundaries. The slower piece is further challenging because of the techniques I need to know to play the piece properly. As I mostly play through the whole piece, keeping up breath with long notes can prove to be challenging. Not rushing, even through fatigue also proved quite challenging. But thanks to the preparation I had in previous rehearsals, I was very well prepared for this concert.
