Term 2 Tabitha Reflection

In term 2, the major objective of the Tabitha GC was to plan and raise money for the project week trip. We participated in two major events to raise money: Royal Hunt of the Sun theatrical play and Wavelengths concert.

LO4 (Commitment) – I showed commitment in the wavelengths concert as even though I was performing, I helped out selling goods during the intermission as well as helping to clean up after the concert. I also participated in the selling for a whole session in the sale for Royal Hunt of the Sun. I commitment has been shown to increase the sales and help towards the cause we are working towards.

LO3-Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

By organising large events as such for a significant cause, I developed skills in leadership, planning, and preparing in advance.

Initial EE Reflection

At first, I knew I wanted to do an extended essay on computer science. I believe that computer science will an area of knowledge that can push forward our technology and major scientific discoveries due to the complex nature of the subject, but also the applicability of it on the real world. I considered delving into artificial intelligence and parallel computing, but from my research, I found that quantum computing is an area that is difficult yet fascinating. I thought that exploring a quantum algorithm through experimentation would be the best way to further my learning. After researching more, I was interested in Shor’s law as it has real world application that can affect our daily life. Through online research, I utilized a quantum environment, qiskit, to program and the IBM QX computer to put the algorithm into action. Based on the output of the program, I found that I can measure the reliability of the algorithm.

Jazz Combo Term 1 Reflection

Jazz Combo is another activity I am doing for my creativity.  One big challenge I have to face in this creativity is doing improvised solos in front of the class.

LO2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

It is quite nerve-wracking to perform in front of a whole group of people and it is definitely something I need to work more towards.

Pre-Season Basketball Term 1 CAS Reflection

To improve my skills in basketball so I can play for the school, I joined U19 pre-season basketball. We had practice every Tuesday morning from 6:30 and Thursday afternoon at 6:00. Practice is very tough but it improved my fitness and basketball skills.

LO1-Identify their own strengths and develop areas for growth. Students are able to see themselves as individuals with various abilities and skills, of which some are more developed than others.

My main strength is defense. These strengths benefit my team in stopping the other team from scoring. Something I need to improve more on is shooting, especially three point shots. By getting better at shooting I will be able to help my teammates score more. Throughout this season I have improved on my dribbling and driving skills.

Tabitha GC Term 1 CAS Reflection

I am continuing my work in the Tabitha Global Concern this year. I have been in this GC for 2 years and I plan to continue this for the next two years.

LO4-Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences. Students can articulate the stages from conceiving an idea to executing a plan for a CAS experience or series of CAS experiences

I have shown resilience and commitment in this GC by being part of it for 2 years and continuing it. I participated in the planning and execution of every event held by this GC: Walk for Water, Family Festival, Nails for Nokor, etc. My commitment in this GC has impacted a lot on the success of the GC. Tabitha is quite small compared to other GCs in this school and my commitment made a noticeable impact on the speed and efficiency things ran. I helped by doing marketing, direct selling, planning posters, and many other things that helped.

Jazz Band Term 1 CAS Reflection

This is my second year in Jazz Band. I play the Tenor Sax 1 role within the band.

LO5-Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively.
Students are able to identify, demonstrate and critically discuss the benefits and challenges of
collaboration gained through CAS experiences.

Being in the second year of this band, I understand already the need to collaborate. In a musical piece, there are lines where many people play similar things, lines where many people play different things, and lines where only some people play. To achieve a good sound of unity, there must be collaboration between the sectionals as well as the whole band. My conductor said the band will sound like a “school band” when everyone plays their own part. Even if everyone plays their part correctly, it will still sound bad compared to a band playing together with a few wrong notes. To accomplish this, using your ears to listen to people playing your part or people providing contrast and adapting accordingly is the best way.

We have worked on many pieces in the first season, now we are starting to prepare these pieces for the December Wavelength concert. I am excited to show our results in the future.

Book – A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking

A book I read recently is A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking. In the book, Hawking explores scientific theories of gravity from Newton’s laws to Einstein’s relativity to quantum physics. He also wrote about the discovery of black holes and his own research on it. The book had some difficult parts in it but the diagram inside helped. I found it quite interesting how scientific theory involved in explaining the world evolved over the years. Newton’s gravity constant explained almost everything we see about gravity except a small difference in Mercury’s orbit. Einstein then came along to develop a new theory in which Mercury’s orbit was, in fact, calculated correctly. However, his model did not fit gravity among tiny particles on a quantum level. The uncertainty principle states that nothing can be measured 100% accurately, there will always be an uncertainty. This uncertainty affects small particles more than large objects, but does this mean that science cannot progress further? Is it that we can never find out the truth of how the universe works?

This booked answered many of my previous questions I had in my mind when I studied physics involving the speed of light and black holes. A few things that I haven’t considered before that I found interesting:

  • Black holes are completely black, and so is the space behind them. It is incredibly hard to tell that a black hole exist other than from calculations of gravity around them.
  • The book mentioned that neutrons were discovered less than a century ago, yet it is something we learn in primary school now.
  • Physics is changing very fast. In a few decades, what we learn in school might be completely different from what people then learn in school. This questions the durability of knowledge and how relevant they will be in a few decades.

“Ever since the dawn of civilization, people have not been content to see events as unconnected and inexplicable. They have craved an understanding of the underlying order in the world. Today we still yearn to know why we are here and where we came from. Humanity’s deepest desire for knowledge is justification enough for our continuing quest. And our goal is nothing less than a complete description of the universe we live in.”

Term 1 Apex Harmony Lodge Service Reflection

This is the CAS reflection for my first term of my Local Service – Apex Harmony Lodge.

LO1-Identify their own strengths and develop areas for growth. Students are able to see themselves as individuals with various abilities and skills, of which some are more developed than others:

I have identified many of my strengths and areas of development for my service. A strength is that I can speak Mandarin. This is very helpful because many of the residents are Chinese and due to their dementia, their english is not good anymore. An area of growth is my communication skills. I need to get better at communicating with strangers. My patient is blind so I need to focus more on auditory communication and more importantly, physical communication. An interesting aspect of working in a dementia home is that every week it will be a new experience for them of meeting me. Due to them unable to remember me, it will be a first meeting with them every time. This means I will be able to know them better and get better in connecting with them faster.

Talking to people with dementia is quite a challenging process. The main challenge is changing the way you speak to them so that they can understand it. For example, your sentences cannot be very long and a lot of times you need to repeat words or phrases loudly. It is also a challenge to read the people, because their facial expressions are not very easy to understand.

My patient, Mr Kan, is a retired company employee who speaks mandarin, english, and some malay.

LO7-Recognise and consider the ethics implications of choices and actions. Students show awareness of the consequences of choices and actions in planning and carrying out CAS experiences:

Working with people with dementia is a new experience for me. Seeing tens of people sitting together in that state, holed up in a confined space inherently not doing anything is quite shocking for me. From this I think more about how ethical it is to keep them confined here. There is no cure for dementia in the science world yet. It is a slow process of the brain rotting and the body steadily decreasing in functions. These patients are mostly abandoned here by their family due to financial or social reasons, but to me it seems like a prison.

To take away this experience, I have learned a lot about dementia as a disease and how it affects people. The scene of a lot of people on wheelchairs huddled around a tv in a room without air conditioning. It made me realize how horrible the disease actually can be. However, the workers at the lodge are all very cheerful and optimistic as a way to combat the gloominess. This is something I need to learn to do as well.

PSE Term 1 Reflection

In the first term of PSE we learned about identity, emotional intelligence, and optimism. Something I would like to work on is being optimistic in what I do. A lot of times I would think negative thoughts and I think converting these thoughts into motivation would really help me improve. I need to change my mindset when getting back grades for tests and projects into how would I improve next time. I also need to turn things I don’t want to do into positive outcomes of what I would want to have.

Emotional Intelligence – my musings around goal setting

Emotional intelligence is shown to be more useful than IQ. I think both are closely related. Your academics can and will affect your thinking process and logical reasoning which will then affect how you interact with others. If you can analyze people better and know how to interact with them, you would get through life better.

Emotional intelligence is something you can learn. Practice of talking with others and interacting socially will increase your EQ. Here, experience is the best teacher. No one is born with EQ. Changing habits and world views will change your EQ.
