PSE Reflection – Unit 1

How will my learning in PSE help my journey in the IB?

When learning about identity, one of the major components was learning about personality and the ‘ideal’ personality to have to ensure and maximise success. We learnt that the ideal personality type has characteristics such as conscientiousness, curiosity, competitiveness and the ability to be adjusting and embrace change. Learning about this will help my along my journey and success in the IB as it provides ideal characteristics that I would like to strive for such as the ability to be adjusting and competitive. After learning about these, I am now aware of what personality traits ensure success in the long run. Along with learning about the ideal personality, we learnt about how to categorise ourselves when working in groups. I have learnt that I am an ‘actor’ in which I like to dive straight into projects and just get started. From this, we learnt the positives and negatives of each category and what challenges and struggles this particular type can have. For example, for an ‘actor’ one can struggle with taking everyone’s feelings into consideration and can often fail to plan effectively. Through this, I am now aware of what I need to be cautious of when working in groups.

Furthermore, we also learnt about emotional intelligence and how different it is from IQ (intelligence quotient), but how it serves a just as important, or even more, important role than IQ. Through this session we learnt how to identify different emotions in both ourselves and others. This will help me over the course of the next two years because once I am aware of my causes of anxiety or discomfort, I will have better skills to handle the root of the problem and solve it.

Lastly, in PSE this unit we have learnt about the importance and significance of grit in achieving and carrying out our long term goals. With grit, similar to perseverance, and self control we can ensure success in the future. It is about a continuous and sustained effort rather than one concentrated push in effort in whatever you do. This can ensure success in the long term goals as sustained hard work will put you in a better position in the future.

Learning outcome 2 – undertaking challenges and developing new skills in the process

This is some evidence of my progress during the rehearsal stages of Culturama. This video was taken 2 weeks into the rehearsal stage and during this rehearsal we were focusing on polishing and fixing up the dance. I am the second one from the far right in the shorts.

This is some evidence from the initial blocking stages of the production, The Royal Hunt of The Sun. This blocking stage was during the scene where my character – the chieftain – gets interrogated by the Spaniards.

Difficult to offend

This year, I would like to develop the skill/quality of having an awareness of my strengths and weaknesses. This is important to me and will help me because I feel that once you have an awareness, you are able to strategize about the future and about what you need to work on to achieve success.

This will help others because once I am aware of what I need to work on and what I can help other with, I will make sure to put myself in a position that is beneficial to others. Once I am able to gather an awareness of myself, I will be able to collaborate and contribute more effectively in groups and with others.

I dislike the EQ characteristic of embracing chance. I see this in myself as I like the idea of comfort and security, and that change can be a little difficult to accept and that change might threaten my ideal vision of comfort.
