Initially, I thought about identifying the link between architecture and culture through different historical periods, but this quickly became too broad a topic so I narrowed my scope by focusing on the current architecture in Singapore and using elements of art and design to explain its link with culture. By doing this I was able to identify and analyse specific buildings and link them to cultural developments of the society for which they were built. Through my research process, I have developed a critical mind in analysing the buildings around me not just for their functional aspect, but also how the design choices made by the architect communicate a sense of culture. I feel that this research effort was successful as it led me to the link between design and purpose as a reflection of the society for which buildings were built, however, upon discussing my draft with my supervisor, I realise that I need to use more subject-specific language.
