First Nations-Led Education Systems

First Nations-led education systems would recognise the oldest education systems that still run today in Indigenous communities. This would allow First Nations children to have access to world-class education designed by First Nations people that privileges language, culture and identity from these communities.

Currently, First Nations children in Australia are heavily disadvantaged by the schooling system. These children are sent into culturally unsafe environments which prioritise the experience, culture and language of white children. First Nations children are unable to see themselves reflected in the school curriculum, and this leads many to feel like failures and drop out of school as these schools do not make them feel like they are listened to. This lack of focus on engaging First Nation children in education causes them to act out more, and because children in Australia can be sent to prison at as young as 10, this creates a school-to-prison pipeline, especially for children from indigenous communities.
