Loss of Language – Chomsky

“When a language disappears, a lot is lost. A language is a repository of cultural wealth. Each language is a way of understanding and interpreting the world” -Chomsky

I definitely agree with Chomsky’s beliefs towards the loss of a language. In many languages, niche words are untransferable to the English language, which is a huge loss of culture and influence. For example, in the Indonesian language, the word “Nongkrong” means the beauty in doing nothing with loved ones with no plan in mind. The culture behind this word represents the laid back culture of Indonesia, surrounded by palm trees and hot weather. With its aggressive pronunciation and parallel effect, no english word would have the ability to replicate the cultural background and the warm impact this word holds to communities. The Indonesian language itself is the glue that binds locals from all 17,000 islands of the nation, all withholding various dialects and cultures of their own, with the exception of Bahasa Indonesia.
