Representing People – Revisiting an Advert

This task is aimed at revisiting old advertisements that were analyzed and to explain them in a better way using the new terminology and concepts learnt regarding advertising.

The above advertisement is meant to advertise hair products, however, it has an underlying meaning that isn’t ideal. The ad displays a woman on the couch who is dressed well and her hair is done, but she has a black eye, and from the context of the man standing behind her we can understand that it suggests that she was a victim of domestic abuse and the man is seen holding the object he probably used to hit her. However the ba message is amplified by the headline shown on the top left corner that says “Look good in all you do”; this implies that no matter what happens u need to try and look good, so in this case, their hair products will help make you beautiful even if u have a black eye, so its almost normalising domestic abuse by acknowledging it and essentially saying it is okay if your husband is hurting you or whatever your circumstance but always try to look good and Fluid is saying they can do that, but the message they convey is extremely unhealthy in the process of advertising their products.
