Boxing & Muay Thai Interim Reflection

2 months in and I already feel like I have grown exponentially in this sport. There is a sense of family brought about their guiding sense of inclusivity and community. This hasĀ  resulted in a lot of confidence in the class. Where in other sports, I feel likeĀ  a fish out of water, in boxing, I walk in with complete ease. Because I am surrounded by people who push themselves to their limits, I tend to focus more on what I can do to improve each session. Often, I will stay behind to work on specific skills as the coaches are willing to help me practice.

This activity has taught me to be confident and humble at the same time. When pad feeding with coaches or more experienced members, they give lots of positive feedback but also remind me to put myself in their shoes. It takes a lot of patience, and at times, I find it hard to summon the confidence I need. I carefully watch the coaches and realize that all it takes is using the language of 1,2,3 and 4, rearranging it to form phrases, sentences, playing with the syntax. There’s a steady rhythm to it as well. A lot of what we do does not fuel aggressive tendencies, rather, a dance between 2 people that can play out in different ways.
