Project Week – CAS end experience LO7

Project week was an experience with a great deal of experimentation and new undertakings. By far the most unique challenge I took part in was my participation at the New Dawn Educare. New Dawn specialises in caring for, and providing activities as well as education for them. We performed a variety of tasks to help around the center. The simplest and easiest were basic labour, such as aiding in cleaning or other such tasks. The most personally challenging for me dealt with interacting directly with the clients. Sometimes this was easy, such as walking with them or feeding those who were physically incapable of feeding themselves. However, I have bouts of discomfort when engaging with these people. This was particularly hard for me when I was feeding a client with extreme mental disabilities. When I fed her, all the soup and food in general simply fell out of her mouth. This was quite disturbing to me. However, I improved throughout the day, as I was later able to feed a man who had lost fine motor, mental, and verbal skills without trouble. Incidentally, I used my (limited) Chinese with the man to appear approachable. In sum, Project week showed me what it was to engage in a more direct way with those who need help.
