Peer Mentor January-June

Peer mentoring was an experience where I would spend my Wednesday and Friday lunches teaching either economics or mathematics to IGCSE students.  I found this to be a nice experience and realised that teaching is actually a lot harder than it seems. Seeing how the IB and IGCSE sylabusses are both very different from one another, it allowed me to go back to some concepts that I had forgotten about. It was rewarding to know that I was helping these students academically, and there was even one student who was looking forward to my teaching the following week and asked me if I could bring back some old notes from my own IGCSE class.  Knowing that people were benefitting from my efforts motivated me to do better and further support them. I believe that this allowed me to recognise my strengths and weaknesses as I found areas in which I had a very hard time explaining certain concepts. It also requires commitment as I was spending my free time helping others and ensured that I’d be there weekly.

Kahaani- Final Reflection

Overall, looking back at my Kahaani experience, I realised how much I enjoyed it. It was really nice getting to dance again after having quit ballet a few years ago, and I do definitely still have somewhat of a passion for it. It was a great experience, however, there were challenges that we had to face as a group due to lack of organisation. We fell behind for a bit as we were not able to practice over the December break, and due to the fact that Grade 10s had their mock exams just before. However, we managed to get a lot of practice done in the last week, which has definitely contributed to our improvement and successful performance. Finally being able to perform our dance on the stage felt amazing, as we had all worked so hard and put so much effort into it. Without a doubt, I will be signing up for Kahaani next year and I’m very much looking forward to it.

Pottery- December 2020

This second season I found myself making some more complex pieces and each piece that I made had a purpose. I started exploring the different techniques and added elements such as glaze to my artworks to make it more special. I made a Christmas tree that I decided to give to a friend and I also made this rose that I will be giving to my mom. I take a lot of time deciding what my next object would be, and I’ve so far been fairly satisfied with the outcome. None of my pieces have been perfect yet, but from each piece I do take away and note the different things that I should improve on in order to avoid making the same mistakes that I have previously made.

KAHAANI- DECEMBER 2020

After a month of practicing at home and having weekly practices with the group, I feel like I’m starting to get the hang of it and I no longer have any difficulties following whatever is going on during the sessions. I memorise the steps easily and I definitely am finding it much easier to perform each step. I can definitely see a huge improvement in my dancing ability and I’m feeling confident about the performance that we are going to have in January. I’m starting to show an interest in dance, and I’m so glad that I signed myself up for this as I never thought that dancing would ever be something that I would enjoy. Dancing with a group is also very amusing and I find it a great way to unite the different students.

Kahaani- Start November 2020

As I only arrived at UWCSEA in September, I was unfortunately not able to sign myself up for Culturama even though I wanted to. I used to take ballet classes as a child, but I was never fond of it and I always found myself not being able to move the way I was supposed to. I was a bit worried about signing up for Kahaani, but many of my friends pushed me to doing it as they said that the movements weren’t complex and that I would be able to manage. This is a video of the first week of practice that we had in November. I was clearly struggling quite a bit as I found it hard to coordinate the different parts of my body and  with remembering the steps, however, I’m excited to challenge myself in this rather amusing way and I’m looking forward to seeing how much progress I can make.

POTTERY- SEPTEMBER 2020

LO1. An experience that will develop strengths

LO2. An experience that will be a challenge to you and where you will learn a new skill…

Down below is a picture of what I made during my first week of pottery. I’ve never tried pottery before, therefore it was a bit of a challenge as I lacked the basic skills. It is also much harder than it seems to be. I didn’t know how to shape my object properly or how to create a strong base, therefore it collapsed by the end of the lesson as it was too thin. However, as we can tell, I had already learnt quite a bit from my first lesson (about what to do and what not to do), so hopefully my skills will only improve from here on.
