Raw Beauty // CAS Project

LO3: demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

LO6: demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The CAS project I will discuss is my involvement with the service ‘Raw Beauty’. Raw Beauty is an environmental initiative that examines the beauty industry focusing on the sustainability of the products and the industry. During my grade 11 year, my main goal for CAS was to get out of my comfort zone and try new things, and for my entire high school career, I have participated in various service groups, mainly in the local service sector. I enjoyed directly working with our service partners, the disabled and children- seeing the instant happiness on their faces taught me the importance of communication. Due to the pandemic, local services- were limited with their opportunities to interact with service partners. As my main goal for CAS was to try new things, I had decided to sign up for this environmental initiative and convey the importance of communication from the perspective of the sustainability of the beauty industry. Although, through this service, I am not able to work directly with service partners, the service makes soaps- allowing me to get the ‘hands-on experience’ I enjoy.

After the first few sessions, it was clear that this service allowed for a holistic understanding of the beauty industry. We explored the chemistry in the production of soap and the stakeholders involved in the production of soap. The goal of Raw Beauty was to cement our presence in the school community by selling soap. Our aim was for the soap to come from a ‘circular loop system’, with most of the ingredients and components coming from the school community. This goal excited me since we will be communicating with the school community to advocate for sustainable beauty products.

Other than the service itself, I enjoyed the group of students I was able to work alongside. Many of the students had a great interest in chemistry and was excited to put their interest into use. I was excited to meet new people who also wanted to try something new through this service. Upon joining the service, I knew I wanted to help guide the students, and fortunately, I became the ‘Awareness Officer’. This leadership role entailed leading a group of students- to first and foremost understand the Sustainable Development Goals affiliated with the service, which then allows us to become experts in the issues, places, and people associated with the beauty industry. As a group, we will have the appropriate knowledge to educate and advocate for our service in the school community. Through this experience, I want to utilise my communication and collaborative skills to lead a group. As this is my first time working in the beauty industry with my growing curiosity, I want to understand and learn more about the complexities of this industry.
