LO1: Awareness – Increased awareness of strengths and areas for growth
LO4: Commitment – Showing Perseverance, resilience
November 23-26, I had my third golf tournament, which was the largest one this semester year, SEASAC. We, a team of eight players, two females and six males, went to Bangkok for the second time to compete with more than ten international schools in South East Asia.
On Nov. 23, we got up early in the morning at 4 o’clock to catch the flight. As soon as we got to Bangkok, with no time having lunch, we teed off for our practice round. I was shocked when one of the host school coaches told us that we would not have a buggy for the entire tournament, meaning that we needed to walk all eighteen holes for six to seven hours for three rounds. It was a first time playing golf without a buggy. The sun was fierce. I was so tired due to getting up that early in the morning and felt weak due to not having lunch. After only eight holes, I was so exhausted and felt pain in my legs. Whenever we had to wait for the previous group to play, the other player in my team and I just sat down on the course. Both of us wanted to give up since it was merely a practice round and it wouldn’t affect our final result. Nonetheless, we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to get familiar with the course and practice our swings. With the encouragement from each other, we both persisted in. My result was actually quite good; I shot my second best score. (LO4)
On the first day of the real tournament (second day of the trip), I got up in the morning and felt pain in most parts of body, legs, arms, backs… My first hole was a disaster. After my first shot, I didn’t expect my ball to go out of the bound until I walked there and found it lying five centimeters out of the white post. At that time, my heart suddenly sunk and I felt frustrated. A penalty of two strokes already for the first shot. I tried to calm myself down and focused on my second shot… This round wasn’t really good. At night, I carefully reflected on the shots of the day. There were some problems with my swing since my muscles were too tight and painful. My swing was a bit out of the routine and the points for lots of shots were not in the best position. Also, the mentality was extremely vital. (LO1)
On the last day, I slowed my pace down and tried to focus on the pace instead of strength. Fortunately, I recovered to my normal condition and hit well again.
