LO5: Collaboration – Working together to achieve an outcome
LO7: Ethics – Considering the ethical implication of actions
The organization that we visited was a home to 120 orphans from kindergarten to middle school. Before I went there, I had a kind of stereotype that orphans were normally quite quiet and shy. Nonetheless, the children I met there were extremely out-going and optimistic and my stereotype was completely falsified. Although their family backgrounds were unfortunate, it did not mean that they were different from us. All the children were so pure and smiled all the time. Their smiles warmed me and had always reminded me that there was no problem that could not be overcome and always stay positive.
The project week experience led me to raise and consider several ethical questions.
The children at the organization lived together in different houses, as a big family. The older ones took care of the younger ones and helped each other. After the older ones graduated from middle school, they would go to the city to work. The environment they currently were in was like a “Land of Peach Blossom” with fine protection, but when they entered the society, things would be a lot more complexed and they would encounter lots of difficulties. Living in such “Land of Peach Blossom”, with little pain, worry etc, is what numerous people desire for. Then, should the children just always be protected in this kind of environment? However, stepping into the society is milestone/essential step for them to develop into adults and live with their own abilities.
The children there receive education as everyone does, but they have little homework and what they do in school is more based on their interest since there is no pressure on them. I started to worry about whether the education they receive would be enough to support them to perform well in the society. However, at the same time, living an enjoyable childhood and pursuing their own interests are so pivotal. Hence, what is the balance between education and childhood/interest?
