Marc Nair: Poetographer

When Marc Nair came to talk to us, I was honestly expecting a slightly boring, slightly philosophical talk about poetry and photography. I had always thought that poems were just a kind of story about a topic, but the way Marc Nair introduced his writing and spoken word changed my views about poetry. From his poems about a plastic pelago, and about pan-asians, it helped me realise that poems can be used to convey messages, as well as be humorous and ironic. I also had the same experience with the way that Marc Nair talked about photography. The way he talked about finding a chance and anticipating the right moment, changed my views from photography being a still frame, to being more of a way of capturing a memory, or a point in time.. He also talked about how process is critical, which made me realise that while the end result is important, something else that is equally important, if not more, is the way you get there.

  1. I really like how you not only explained what you learned but also why what you had learned was important. To summarize your thinking, I think the essence of this session is that art can impact people in different ways, whether it be a deep message or it can even be humorous. Something that I mentioned in my post, that you could also add is Mark Nair’s influences that made him write what he writes.
