Analysis on Anthony Bourdain’s post

Bourdain reflects, promotes, or challenges cultural ideologies and stereotypes by providing multiple examples that are familiar to readers. In the first part of his argument, he only gave examples of why Americans love Mexicans – he talked about how they’re hard workers, have great food, and drugs. At the end of that argument, he challenges, “So, why don’t we love Mexico?”. This one line has a strong meaning and creates a sense of suspension. Readers will be thinking and questioning themselves that, “why don’t we love Mexico?”. We can see that he tried to change readers’ (Americans) mindset of cultural ideologies and stereotypes towards Mexican here. After that line, he starts to talk about possible reasons why we don’t love Mexico by referencing the incidents that had happened over drugs, “Drug War”.

There are several Rhetorical Strategies used in his post. The first one that comes up in his post is the repetition of structure. It creates a rhythm and a speed in the text which catches readers’ interest. Therefore it is an effective use of repetition. In the repetition, sentences start with “we”. It is the use of a personal pronoun that encourages readers to realize that they’re also part of the discussion.
