We Named Our Whale Shark!!

LO5, LO3

This term we finally heard back from conservation international and learned that as soon as they can they will be tagging a whale shark for us! To prepare for this and let the school know about the xciting news, we had a competition to name the whale shark. We facetimed dover several times in order to plan this and had several great ideas in the works when one day we were informed that a teacher had already gone ahead and spoken to the grade 3’s. They had already come up with names without us!

This was really hard for us because we wanted to involve the whole school in the naming process and we wanted to collaborate with dover. As well as that, we could see several problems with the names they had chosen (eg. oreo was a name one of the classes chose and it is a company associated with palm oil). We had to overcome these challenges by coming up with a solution.

In the end we used the names that the grade 3’s chose, but included the rest of the school by allowing them to vote on the final name. We set up a booth in the plaza and made an online form.

The online form was fairly simple to make but unfortunately we forgot to limit the number of times people could vote to one, so some people voted 300+ times.

The stall in the plaza took a lot of vote. We had to meet with the service office several times outside of the normal meeting times and stay after school to set up. It took a lot of team work to get all the materials and make the stall look nice.

It was all worth it in the end as we got more than 1000 votes and chose our final name: Guppy
