On Sunday, we had a light wind sailing day… that was fun?

I have never been a fan of light wind sailing, especially since the last class of boat I sailed (the byte) was a little small for me, ergo I was too heavy for the boat… but i thought that it would be different this time around, the Laser is bigger and it actually is a perfect match for my height and weight, so how hard could light wind be? The answer? Very.

Turns out, I’m not what you would call experienced when it comes to light wind sailing. My sail trim is constantly off and I can’t maintain both speed and bearing at the same time.  Since I’m not that great at keeping my speed up, light wind sails become very frustrating.

And light wind is not the only problem, I still struggle with down wind, it’s like I haven’t made any progress what-so-ever. I constantly struggle with down wind and now I feel like this should be my main target : to improve my downwind. Along with this I absolutely HAVE to learn the proper sail trim for light wind and actually remember it… hopefully next week is also light wind, so that I can get some practice with the light wind and actually learn to use it to my advantage… light wind also will provide a good opportunity to practice some roll tacks… I’m not particularly good with those either (also light wind means the boat moves slower so it makes roll tacks a lot easier).

Sailing is going to a long road of learning and practice, but hopefully I will slowly start noticing some improvements in my boat handling.
