Why do you think the concept of respectability became more important as the middle class expanded?
I think that the concept of respectability became more significant with the rise of the middle class because people developed certain expectations regarding how people were to act in their society. Women were expected to remain housewives, her main role being to support her husband and children. Men were expected to hold occupations and provide for their family.
