Melanie Row, a member of the UWCSEA community shared an inspiring story with us, and I was lucky to hear it. Over the course of 4 days, she went from living a perfectly normal live with a husband and two kids, to being completely paralysed in her entire right side of her body. Because of this, she had learn to walk all over again. She described it as ‘one of the most complex processes’. She mentions how she was presented as a stroke victim and she learned to walk relatively fast compared to the other people in the rehab centre with her, in about 5 months. I think that it is truly amazing how optimistic she was about the whole situation. When discovered that she has MS, she was not traumatised or angry, in fact, she sees the whole situation as an advantage. This is because it had opened her eyes to a world of medical care and gave her newfound respect to it. The most interesting thing I found was how it had affected her relationship with her family. Her daughter found it a learning experience,  as she is fascinated with science. But, her son and husband thought it was scary and devastating, because there was no certain end to the road, and there still isn’t. She has a type of MS that has the tendency to relapse. However, the incredible thing is, this doesn’t stop her from living her life. She continues to experience to things, and doesn’t let MS control her life. ” Any experience will always impact your life, and you can’t control the experiences, but you can control the reactions to it”.  I believe that this is an important lesson to keep in mind for everything, as there is something you can learn from every new thing you try/go through. Furthermore, I think that being positive in negative situations can help bring the benefit out of it, and not let an experience go to waste, but the way Melanie Row handled it is astonishing, as not many people would have the same approach.
