Alex Advocate at Alexandra Hospital – Final Reflection

LO3 Initiative

While volunteering at alexandra hospital I showed initiative by planning some more interactive activities with the patients. Sometimes there was a language barrier because I can speak english, spanish and a bit of hindi but most of the patients could speak chinese and only a little english. I found some games online that I could play with the patients which would allow us to build a relationship without being taken back by the language barrier.

Last time I visited I was included in the video about the volunteers and was interviewed by a supervisor. Although this isn’t a part of the normal sessions, I was surprised that I was able to speak with such confidence as I am usually shy when it comes to speaking on tape. This activity has allowed me to build bonds with the patients, learn more about myself and my abilities to communicate with language barriers. I’m excited to volunteer again soon!
