ELP Post: Journalism and Bias

If the job of a journalist is meant to report news in the most objective and unbiased way possible, what pressures are on journalists which might make this difficult to achieve?

-Perspective (well rounded // holistic // overall)

In order to report news in the most objective and unbiased way possible, a holistic and well rounded approach has to be put in place when displaying the varied perspectives within a piece.

-Access

-Higher ups (what does the corporation want?)

-their own opinion + biases (values, beliefs)

-the public

-the government

-all parties involved

There are multiple pressures put on journalists (both by themselves and others). There is a question of whether these “pressures” could be defined/referred to as obligations. A variety of points can be made regarding perspective and how well rounded, holistic and overall a piece is presented. In order to report news in the most objective and unbiased way possible, a holistic and well rounded approach has to be put in place when displaying the varied perspectives within a piece. This however is almost opposite from the point + prompt of what pressures are put on journalists. Another limiting factor for journalists is access. This is regarding access to information. When access is limited the piece/article is not reported objectively or unbiased.
