Focus on the youth → fear + attempt to quell a generation.

Why is it important to ‘hear’ the stories of those actually affected by the events?

Although everything communicated is seen through the lens of individuals, it is vital to understand the rawness and need of that lens as a whole perception cannot be formulated through the lens of the unaffected. The only way stories are heard is through those actually affected by events. Links to empathy + sympathy, true understanding includes emotions. → the human experience.

Can a nation ever fully recover from a dark past?

Every nation has a dark past. Part of recovery is recognition. In all honesty it’s a complex question. In my current view this is because once you are aware of what is included in that dark past, there’s a real question on whether a/the nation truly deserves a full recovery. I believe at times it’s important to separate and understand the separation between a nation and its people. The focus and criteria should be the recovery of the people and individuals living their lives now. Of course this means that the time for a nation to “fully recover” may seem like its constantly being pushed away. However the number one priority is healing the people before the “full recovery” of a nation. The potential held in each individual is immeasurable. Who knows if focusing on healing the individuals and people of a nation will lead to a movement and development that brings that sought after full recovery, if it exists. People make nations.
