I went into this knowing that I definitely wanted to center my EE around memes and the influence they’ve had on politics. I talked to my supervisor about going more into depth about certain ways that memes can influence politics, from gender equality to the US 2016 election. My supervisor suggested that I refine my topic to just one country, so I picked the US since I’m American and I get to vote in the next election, so it relates very well to me. We also explored the possibility of comparing memes across different social media platforms such as Tumblr and Reddit and seeing how the differing opinions may be shaping the way people think based on what social media they use. This conversation helped me to understand what direction I was moving in, as I started with a really broad topic and managed to narrow it down much more.
