English Mock

It went okay but the main areas that I need to focus on are learning and identifying more techniques, and linking the techniques used to a bigger picture. I got a total of 14 marks, which is 1 off a 6. Overall, I identified some clear ideas and I have many moments of inference. It is necessary to revise the features and terminological features of comics and other text types before the real exam as my features can be a hit or miss. I need to focus more on the explanation of bigger ideas in the text.

Paper 1 January 2021 Cartoon Feedback + Next Steps

Teacher Feedback:

Some really good observations here, Calum – you’ve got the main ideas the artist is invoking here, and you’ve drawn up the texts features to help substantiate your analysis. Great! At times, you’re still relying more on describing whats in the text without linking it to a point of interpretation – be mindful of this!

Next steps – focus more on linking the points to a bigger theme.

Project Week Reflection

Learning Outcomes: 6, 7

I have always been an animal person and for project week I felt that I should do something associated with animals and animal conservation. My friends were willing to do so though I felt as though I was pressuring them to do something they didn’t really want to do. This made me strongly question the ethics of my choices. Just because I am super passionate about animals and want to spend project week doing animal stuff, I should not be forcing or pressuring my peers to do similar things to me. It is morally wrong to force onto others my own personal opinion, even if it is for a good cause. I feel as though this question of ethics is an extremely relevant question in todays society. We often feel the need to force our own opinions onto others, hoping they will adopt our own doctrines in the name of greater good.

Project Week Reflection

Learning Outcome: 3, 6

Planning for project week allowed me and my peers to properly plan and initiate a CAS experience that was relevant to us. The experience revolved around volunteering with elephants, a global issue of deep significance to me. The planning stages were very difficult, the sanctuary was in the middle of Laos and the transport to the sanctuary was very sparse, furthermore it was difficult to find accommodation near the sanctuary as the sanctuary was so desolate. Overall though, I did thoroughly enjoy planning and envisioning what our trip would be like.

Student Voice Reflection 1

Learning Outcomes: 6, 7

Student voice in the beginning was a bit lackluster, we weren’t taking much action on issues occurring within the campus, though even if we had valid ideas that would provide a solution for these issues, our role wasn’t really to come up with solutions to problems within the campus. Student voice showed me how important communication and collaboration is within a community, the whole point of student voice it to communicate what is happening in the school to your peers. It got me to reflect the global issue of media, and the information they distribute. Essentially I was playing the role of a media corporation and the responsibility of spreading just information was in my hands. It highlighted the global issue of fake news, and the responsibility these corporations have.

TOK Year In Reflection

TOK Grade 11 Year in Reflection

  1. What DON’T you get?
  2. What DO you get?
  3. What has stood out for you?
  4. Has TOK changed your thinking at all this year?
  5. Has TOK ruined your thinking at all this year?
  6. What do you aim to achieve next year?

Generally I feel as though I have a decent understanding in TOK though something that I find difficult to really understand is art. I just feel that due to the inherent subjectivity of art it is extremely difficult to label it, and claim that it produces knowledge, what knowledge is exactly produced from the art? Is the calming sensation that you get when you admire a piece of art considered knowledge? Is it the fact that the art may contain some political information or a piece of history? There are just so many nuances when it comes to art that I find it very difficult to really understand what we mean about knowledge when it comes to art. I find that art does share knowledge effectively but in order to make the claim that it produces knowledge I feel as though we need to create a much clearer definition of what knowledge is.

I think the main thing about TOK that I understand is the thought process that one requires when thinking about really anything when it comes to TOK. TOK requires a thought process that we haven’t really had to employ ever in our life. I feel as though TOK requires us to critically think for ourselves, there really isn’t a mark scheme or anything that shows you how you should think, unlike other subjects. The thing that I get well in TOK is that I can critically think about what we talk about in this lesson and every now and then I can provide some input that provides a new perspective to the subject at hand.

Ethics in general has stood out to me during TOK, and religion, but mostly ethics. I’ve always found ethics very interesting because everyone’s ethics are different. Trying to understand why certain people think a certain way, or why someone might not agree with something that clearly may seem as the objectively “right” thing to do, is very interesting to me.

Honestly I don’t think it has too much. I mentioned earlier about how TOK requires you to think in a much more critical manner about the information presented to you and your environment in general, though I feel as though I had already developed that thought process already, though being able to apply it in TOK instead of just dilemmas I read about online, or certain concepts created by philosophers, is quite good.

I don’t think TOK has ruined my thinking, as I stated earlier it has really just stayed the same, I have just found a way to apply this side of my thinking that I don’t use as often, which now coming to think of it likely has had some effect on me as a person, though I am just unaware of that affect right now, or there is no affect.

Next year I aim to develop my knowledge in the AOK’s and the WOK’s as I feel as though they are the most applicable things we learn in TOK. Generally I enjoy learning things that may be applicable to my life, and I feel as though gaining a much deeper understanding of the AOK’s and WOK’s would allow me to properly apply my knowledge into my life.

EE Reflection 1

I’ve had some issues with my EE, I had to change my question initially because there wasn’t enough data on the topic. I changed my question from “how does climate change affect the populations of blue whales in the chilean sea” to “how is climate change affecting the polar bear populations My initial question was “how does climate change affect the populations of blue whales in the Chilean Sea”. There was very little on the population of blue whales and most of the data was of sightings and estimates. I changed the question to “How is climate change affecting the polar bear populations in the arctic?”, this had more data and allowed me to link ESS and Geo in an effective manner.

Liza Donelly Political Cartoon Analysis

In Liza Donelly’s political cartoon she seems to address an issue rooted within our society. We tend to categorize people into many categories, gender being one of them. This is a natural occurrence and one that cannot be avoided. In Donelly’s cartoon, she addresses the issue that we tend to characterise things that have no gender, or are incapable of choosing their gender, as male. This is an issue as it represses women and tends to further support our male dominated society.

The cartoon portrays two, what appears to be females, clothing and making a snow-person. At the bottom of the cartoon we can see a dialogue occuring between the females and the snow-person, where the snow-person says “What makes you assume that I’m a snow man?” The dialogue presents the issue of how we categorize things primarily as males, and how that is unfair. As the word man is underlined in the dialogue, it places an important emphasis on the idea that the snow-person is a man. The comic is very satirical as it shows how we have forced a gender upon an inanimate object, and that the gender that we have given that object is male. Given that the snow-person is somewhat objecting against being labelled as a man is quite funny considering it has no gender or capability of thought. Furthermore the fact that it is two women, one being an adult, the other being a child, that is dressing the snow-person, it shows how the issue of labelling things as masculine is such a deep rooted issue within our society, that even those of the opposite gender, naturally label things as male instead of female. It shows how even though objects may be inanimate, we still tend to categorise them as males due to the dominance of males in our society,

The cartoon portrays a harsh truth within our society, hence why this comic requires some context to be able to understand it. As males have had a dominant role throughout history, our society has been constructed in such a way that it views male as the dominant gender. The result of this is that we label things that would have no gender as male, whenever we need to assign a gender to something, we tend to label it as male, as that is the society that has been provided to us. Without the context of what our society is like and the subtle (or sometimes not subtle) male dominance within it, it would be near impossible to understand the contents of the political cartoons, and the message entailed within it. The comic presents a question that seems silly, but unearths deep rooted flaws within our society, why isn’t the snowman, labelled a snowwoman, or a gender neutral term? The question is silly because we call it a snowman because it just is a snowman, that is how we have been raised, we’ve been raised in a way that when we see three balls of snow piled on top of each other it is just a snowman, no questions asked. When we begin to ask the question why is it a snowman, it presents a myriad of complex issues deeply rooted in our societies, but these issues are taught to us from the day we are born, making it much more difficult to overcome the issue of male dominance in our society. Just causing the change from snowman to snowperson is seemingly insurmountable, it would require to change nearly everyone’s typical label for one small object, and will likely need a change in culture as a whole, in order to achieve this feat. As we are taught as children to label certain things as male, and taught subtle nods to male dominance, becoming aware, and overcoming male dominance in current day society is much more difficult than it should be.

NYTimes Political Cartoon

  1. What is going on in this cartoon?

Two people are getting/have gotten their mugshots and are both holding up their labels. It is clear that the one on the left is a young adolescent black male, and the on the right appears to be (we can assume) is much older than the character on the left, having a beard and a much more worn down and has more of a criminal aura to him, likely due to the bags around the eyes, the beard etc. The black adolescent is clearly very sorrowful and scared, most importantly is clearly a child. The black child is labelled “man” whereas the white adult is labelled “just a boy”. Likely symbolizing the depiction of black people in comparison to white people, and how they are treated unfairly in the media and in general.

  1. What do you see that makes you say that?

It’s clear that the child is an adolescent and is being labelled as man, the opposite is occurring for the white person. The black adolescent is shorter and has much more youth-like features as oppose to the white adult.

  1. What social or political issue is being addressed?

The cartoon addresses the issue of the unjust representation of blacks in the media and in general. It suggests that a white male who is clearly older, is labelled as “just a boy” whereas the black child, who is actually a boy is labelled as a man. It shows the minor differences we use between the two and the bias that presents. Of course someone is going to more sympathetic to the character being represented as a young boy, as oppose to a man.  It shows the slight injustices committed against blacks and slightly exagerates it, as to represent how these constant slight biases often lead to one having a much more unfair perspective on blacks, as their sub-concious has always been used to labelling them in such a way.
