Two Stories that Started in Maximum Security Prisons and Continue Today in Argentina

“one minute in your life can end you up in prison for the rest of it”

I’ve never had Mr. Suarez teach me, but from what I’ve heard, he’s an advocate for mindfulness and meditation, but this session today showed me that he’s much more than a science teacher who loves mindfulness and meditation.

He tells us the story of three people. Him, German (pronounced her – man) and Gaby. This meeting happened in a maximum security prison in Argentina. He tells us “my connection to prison started when I was 16 years old. I witnessed a maths lesson and there was a young and beautful teaching the tough inmantes. I could see hige love and reosect in the class. There was a balance” which Suarez later added on, is rare. “it was an inspiration; they’re like me, they just made a mistake”

This caused him to donate his color TV (a privilege back in the old days” and decided to become a teacher. He volunteered at the prison and taught some science, and some science classes akon with some yoga. “You can be intelligent but ignorant if you don’t have proper education”

He ended up teaching German and Gaby. Gaby had a dark childhood and committed a crime that led him to 28 years in jail wit’s sentenced to death. He’s free now and studied lawyer. He says he did not have time to study an.d Mr Suarez is completely assured he’s back in crime. When asked if this feels like a failure, he said “No. Gaby taught me more than I taught him and I can’t change people’s lives”.

German, on the other hand, was senteced to 11 years for not being a snitch and sacrificing himself, rather than the actual crime lords who he knew would harm him and his family if he didn’t go to jail. He’s skilled with his hand and in fact, carried the injured classmates to class. He leads a decent life ansd had a “happy ending”. Suarez states he’s now womrking with an old man’s machinery.

“love and attention you receive from your parents and teachers can change your life”
