Culturama – Ghana #4

Show day !

The performance was SO SO much fun! The atmosphere was so high energy! Culturama as a whole was such an amazing experience, and I’m so glad I chose to participate, especially because I was apprehensive about it to begin with, being in a new school. I think that the environment has almost motivated me to become involved in other things, and explore things outside of my comfort zone in the future. Of course there are many things to take from this, but the main thing is using it to remind myself that taking risks are very much worth it.

Culturama – Ghana #3

Light plot:

The light plot rehearsal was on a Saturday 🙁  but I knew it was important to go for the dance leaders, also because signing up for culturama in the first place was a commitment, and it would be irresponsible not to see it through. The light plot was tiring and repetitive, but also important for us to be focused so the committee could sort out lighting and give us pointers. We’d only been there 4 hours when they’ve spent whole weekends organising the show, so cooperation was the best for everyone involved. the light plot was good for several reasons:

Improving the dance – there is only so much the leaders can do with us in the dance studio

Reminding us of how close the show is – keeping us on task, a little bit of pressure is useful

Giving us a taste of what culturama will be – a good source of motivation and excitement overall 🙂

Culturama – Ghana #1

I very much enjoyed our first rehearsal for Ghana. The dance is extremely high energy and fun. I also enjoy that the dance style is new to me and extremely different to what i’ve tried before: this both provides a good opportunity for exploring new experiences and new areas in dance, but can also be rather intimidating when trying something completely new, and having to perform after 6-ish rehearsals. Overall, the dance is coming along well, though it’s proven to be challenging working with different ages/experiences when it comes to technical elements (e.g placement), bringing my attention to performing collaboratively and as a group, and what that may encompass (e.g. identifying your own areas of improvement as its unlikely the dance leaders will evaluate everyone individually, communicating with others and making your own contributions to the dance, recognising that its a GROUP performance and you have to be aware of complimenting the group as a whole rather than solely focusing on yourself (things have to be well timed and sharp otherwise they look messy)) . I’m confident it will come along naturally, especially because everyone is super enthusiastic about the whole thing.

PPIS – #1

The service i’m participating in is doing arts, crafts, games and theatre with pre-school kids (ages 3-4) that come from less financially privileged backgrounds.  The first week was spent clarifying questions and brainstorming anything we’d want to observe/find out during our visit at the pre-school. The grouped worked collaboratively in compiling a google doc and organising our questions into methods of research: media, interview, survey and observation. This way we could share and build off of others’ ideas.
