Notes – Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train

After finishing this text I was quite conflicted about what to think. Although the critical conflict throughout the passage was the morality of the characters, despite the fact Angel did the moral thing, it does not feel like the overall conflict of the play was resolved. He was portrayed to be justified in shooting Reverend Kim and we were able to sympathize with him in that regard, he lost his dear friend to a person pretending to be the son of god and using it to make a profit. I felt that Angel should do less time for his actions as a compromise instead of completely going free. But that wasn’t a possibility after Mary Jane declined the reduced sentence as now either he gets acquitted or he goes to jail for the murder of the reverend. After just being surprised with Lucius’ death the author furthers this with the metaphorical end of Angel. The ending represents that sometimes things are above motive, perhaps he had the right intention, but at the core of the play is Angel’s action of actually shooting Reverend Kim, and the fact that he did that means he has to face the consequences.
