LO7-Recognise and consider the ethics implications of choices and actions

Ethics are the moral principles that govern or influence our conduct. Ethics are the basis for what we determine to be the ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ course of action. Students show awareness of the consequences of choices and actions in planning and carrying out CAS experiences.

As a part of the Service Executive Team, I have been working specifically in the Local Service Team. This meant focusing on managing the school’s relationship with the Local Service Partners in Singapore and working towards creating a safe and impactful environment for students and partners.

Due to Covid-19, many of our processes have been halted such as the ability to meet with partners in person. But we remained motivated as we creatively found online alternatives such as zoom calls or pre-recorded videos. Given the scope and variety of services available, this of course had limitations, but by the end of last year, we were able to have almost over half of the local service meet their service in person at least once.

In terms of ethical decisions, of course, maintaining the safety of the partners was a very important factor in trying to get them to meet. But also taking into account the fact that many living conditions were very limited and we were in a privileged position in comparison to many of the partners, it was important for us to remain mindful.

The decisions surrounding this was based on government restrictions but also training from professionals and government modules. Because we were halted for a bit at the start of the year, we allowed students to explore the NCSS modules provided by the government to help educate the student on proper procedures when interacting with different people, especially since many of our services work with individuals who may have special needs. This was something very impactful and something that we have since brought forward, even though we have better chances of meeting now.
