Steve Dawson

Before our live session with Steve Dawson, I had researched him quiet a bit. As he was a journalist and a sports news caster, I expected him to be a bit quirky and a well developed talker. My expectations did not fail me and he was fairly alike to what I imagined him to be like. After the talk has been wrapped up I realised that my perception of journalists and news casters cannot be applied to everyone in that industry. Steve Dawson gave an example of Larry King and how he always interrupted his interviewees and said a lot of things to make himself look better.

To be quiet honest I never really fully understood what journalists did until this session with Steve Dawson. One of the events of his life that he talked about was his career change from being a simple accountant to a journalist who had interviewed some world famous figures, like Manny Pacquiao. I have heard of a lot of people, including family friends, who changed their careers due to them not being able to be genuinely happy and them enjoying their work. I have thought about this issue happening to me as well, and honestly after this session I feel like I have some advice from Steve Dawson if it ends up happening to me. As long as I enjoy something I am doing it will be successful.

In class we have been learning about different types of articles and slightly touched on how to ask relevant questions to interviewees. Steve Dawson, being a journalist, told us 6 different tips on how to be a good journalist which helped us reshape our own questions that we were going to ask him towards the end. The tips he gave us were really good and would also help us in the future when we are asking questions to other guest speakers.

This session did not really inspire me to write about the guest speaker or the issue, but it inspired me to pick my career carefully as well as do things that I enjoy to make the best out of life. The only thing I am unsure about is is if I want to meet famous celebrities more than not wanting to be a journalist.

Some questions I would have liked to ask the guest speaker would have been: Does it matter how far in your life you find out what career you actually enjoy?

And a follow up being: Is it ever too late to make a career change?

Some questions I would have liked to ask my peers: How many of you now want to become a journalist?

And a follow up being: How many of you wish you were interested in journalism so you can meet famous celebrities?

Overall the session with Steve Dawson, on my opinion went smoothly and he was a speaker worth listening to. It was engaging and fairly entertaining, as well as, a lot of knowledge came out of the session.

  1. This is a really thoughtful post, Tomi – considered and honest. Yes, I was wondering too how many people might have journalism in mind following Steve’s talk.
