KATHAK: CAS REFLECTION 2

This performance was a challenging one as we had to build upon what we’d already learned previously. Our teacher made the original piece, teentaal, into one which had varied speeds and footwork combinations. I enjoyed this performance thoroughly as we were able to test our previous capabilities and use them in a different manner. We had to all collaborate to make sure the performance was synchronized and we supported each other through the tiring but fruitful event. This event demanded commitment as it was, firstly, on a busy school night and secondly, required that I dress up in the expansive hair and makeup that was needed. Although the process was enjoyable it was difficult to balance the stresses of school along with the performance.

Additionally, we recently started learning a new beat pattern known as jaabtaal. This beat pattern is unlike what I’ve been learning throughout my dance education and found it hard to get used to it. We started learning some short pieces in this beat pattern which have not only been extremely intriguing to learn but also at times, confusing.
