GENDER ROLES IN ADVERTISING

Protein Wolrd Advertisement:

In the image shown above is an advertisement from protein world with q picture of a girl who has societies ideal body type displayed for everyone to see and judge.

This was also featured on The Guardian which talked about how this is very inappropriate and sexism. This advertisement has been since removed due to many complaints on how this is inappropriate.

This advertisement shows what societies ideal type of body and displays that if you do not have this body your body is imperfect. Many people look at these advertisements and play a big role in little girls, teens and adults in working on towards getting that desired body shape. In many cases, these body types id also very hard to achieve and take a long time. this can lead to many people going on unhealthy paths such as starving themselves, dieting and excessively working out all to get this desired type of body. Social media plays a big part in the world and more in the generation Z ( Gen Z) where little girls grow up wanting to be this girl and use her as a role model which they look up to look like in their future years.

This advertisement is also overly sexualised as it is a woman wearing a bikini showing way too much for people to see which is inappropriate. She is shown oily which is the main appeal that advertisements use to catch people attention to the advertisement as well as her body, therefore, making people want to buy the product in order to be like her. As people say sex does sell but at what cost and what extent?

CAS reflection – Culturama ( creativity )

This school year I have been part of a school dance show that showcases the different countries and their ways of dancing. It is an annual event that is well-liked by the community.  This year culturama has been tough as we did not have enough time as it normally had in earlier years due to covid and other issues.  I chose out of the 7 Learning outcomes is “An experience where you will show commitment and perseverance”

I was apart of the dance Brazil which showcases the many different cultural types of dances brazil represents. Due to covid, there were many complications in organising the dance and deciding who will get into the dance as there were a limited amount of people allowed to be in the dance, therefore, I had to try my best in order to get into it. there were only 15 people per dance including the two dance leaders.

During rehearsals, I found it very hard to pick everything up and often had to practise with my friends and at home in order to get the complicated choreography right in such a limited time. Rehearsals were often very stressful and scary as if we did not get the choreography we would be told of which was effective but very intimidating. I started to learn how to pick things up faster and faster in order not to be behind and practised all the time, especially before rehearsals.

when it came to the last few dress and final rehearsals there was a lot of work to be done and organises everyone last, minute as we all had to be spaced out on stage in order to obey the 5-metre rule due to covid which changed places of people in the dance. Light plots were rushed due to the limited time, therefore, we did not rehearse our transitions which became a problem in the last dress rehearsals.

On the last dress rehearsals, we had blackouts where we all had to be off stage before the next part of our dance. because of the blackout and a short period of time to get off stage, two girls from the dance collided with one another which caused a big commotion as both dancers were severely hurt. This disaster caused us to rethink and come up with a way to arrange our dance as one of the dancers was unfit to dance due to their conditions. This played a big role in persevering when times were bad as we only had a few days before the actual day.

In what ways does your chosen image express ideas about identity, culture and/or language?

  • The image that originates from a South African artist Anton kannemeyer
  • White people using their privilege against coloured people
  • coloured people who have been rejected due to the colour of their skin turn to drug use and violence
  • Forced into poverty
  • Trying to survive and help their own family
  • Discriminated all the time
  • Due to this, they are described as thugs and vultures, therefore, painting a scary and untrue image of what African Americans are.
  • Due to the colour of their skin, it has given them the identity of a thief
  • Police are killing more and more coloured people and only now it has been recognized ( and arresting)
  • They live under poverty and bad living condition which is
  • People being biased against the colour of their skin
  •  “I just feel like we would’ve known more people in hell” paints a picture on how people portray African Americans and how they are always wrong and that they are always right and therefore go to hell.
  • The African Americans in this political cartoon are portrayed as very dark-skinned with big red lips which makes them look unhuman compared to the other couples in heaven along with them. In this cartoon, the text in it “ I just feel we’d know more people in hell”
  • Recent issues such as BLM where African Americans have been discriminated for doing their daily deeds
  • The artist really emphasised the big red lips which made them look like clowns
  • societies image of what African Americans are
  • George Floyd sparked a major outrage with Americans and other countries and that was when people started protesting for rights and against police enforcement
  • The image they look upset and angry due to the fact that there aren’t any people like them in heaven and the facts that in the back there are two couples who are white and seem to be very happy unlike them
  • this discrimination has been going on ever since anyone could remember and has been apart of history
  • society has painted a picture to everyone that African American are dangerous and many people are fearful of them but in reality, they are just like us inside and out no matter what colour or race they are we are all human.
  • Black faces and red-lipped
  • Africa American styled hair
  • Many African American shot killed for being wrongfully accused by mainly white police enforcement due to the initial fear of being hurt by an African American which is the bad mindset that has been emplaced in everyone’s minds of what African Americans are and that we should fear them but we shouldn’t.

Strengths and Weaknesses and what I want to improve on.

Strengths:

  • I don’t hold grudges and if I do it would not be for very long as I am quite a forgiving person.
  • I always go with the flow so I am quite good at embracing change.
  • I am a very optimistic person and will not be tied down to people who make me feel sad.
  • I am quite empathic and always try to help others in any situation.

Weaknesses:

  • I am quite a sensitive person and can be hurt in some situations
  •  I do not get enough sleep which fuels my caffeine addiction
  • I do not always move on and  stick to the past

What I want to improve is learning how to say no as at the time I can be a little easy going and try not to offend anyone but by doing that I let people get what they want. I want to have more sleep so that my addiction to caffeine gets better and so I can concentrate more during school.

My Crest Award

I am researching about the Causes and effects of the Australian wild fire 2020.

I have researched on different sites gathering different data to help support my claim. I have decided on this topic as I am a geography student where we have looked at this issue before. This is a topic where I am most interested in working in. During this decision it has driven me to my drive question which is What are the causes and effects of the Australian wild fire in 2020. Whereas before I had it on volcanoes but unfortunately was not good enough for research.

The Australian wild bush fire was a devastating event where many wild life was lost which drew me into wanting to research on.

My personal statement

I cannot believe that it has been four years since I have joined this school UWCSEA. With every year being new and exciting. I loved the trip that I went to this year which is the Japan Cherry Blossom trip. I also had my first ever mock in examination rules.

This whole school year I have grown to be a better person since the start of grade 9. There were many ups and downs with new learning styles and subjects, new people in the grade and new friends etc… this year has gone by very fast as I got to know more and more people who joined this year and learnt many units and realised how much pressure high school really is. Not so long ago we had a mock mock exam which was a really good experience of how strict an examination really is. Even though I was very stressed I made it in the end and overall I think it was a great experience since it prepares us for the real exams and the whole mocks really helped me open my eyes and realise that it is only the beginning of the exams.

This year I tried a lot more than one activity. I signed up for touch rugby tryouts since I have done touch for 3 years sadly it was not the same and I did not have the same teammates that I was used too. Later on this year I signed up for pre-season softball which was actually a challenge since it was early in the morning and I am not a morning person. Sadly I had to quit almost to the end of the season due to a back injury which affected my swing.
This year I went to the Japan Cherry Blossom trip. It was an amazing trip overall I really loved the fact that this year we got to mix with some of the Dover students whom I am still really close to. This trip has built my social skills. It was a beautiful area and camping grounds and every day I woke up happy since I loved exploring the woods in Japan and the history behind it. Everyone was very nice and welcoming and encouraged each other during the hiking. Hiking was a big challenge as I am not really the kind of person who goes on walks for more than two hours and there were over 5 hours each day. We were all a big happy family and when it was time to leave we all hugged one another and said our goodbyes.

This year I signed up for Urban Gardening. In grade 7 I did the middle school urban gardening which was where I started to love gardening new and exciting herbs and vegetables. This year I learnt a lot of different techniques of how to remove a big banana tree and how difficult it is to grow vegetables in Singapore as it is really limited. I was given a bed where I would tend to it every Monday after school with my partner putting in more soil and getting rid of the weeds that I have grown back over and over again which is a big pain. My goal for grade 10 is to start studying more and listening to the teachers instead of dozing off during class and getting distracted by my peers. I really want to strive to get better grades in Chinese, Science and Mathematics.

Nature or Nurture?

In my Gpers class we have all been debating about wether nature or nurture is more important.

I honestly think that both nature and nurture are important.
They are important because for some cases nurture has a really big impact due to a science experiment with two rats who has different traits raising their young. to their surprise, nurture won due to the rat that had a loving biological mum gave the trait to its biological young and for the rat that didn’t have the trait passed on their way of raising their young to its biological young. Then there was an experiment on a boy who’s penis got cut off and was turned into a girl and was treated like one for 12 years but then the scientist found out that the boy who was turned into a girl was not happy because he/ always thought of him or herself as identified as a boy and that could be because a boys brain is twice as bigger than a girls brain and that must have been the feeling that he was always meant to be a boy.

How to Meditate

Hi this is going to be a bit weird. I am writing about how to meditate.

In the article that I read there were 18 Mindfulness meditation instructions. But since it is a very long list of instruction I am going to write a few.

1. Set aside time each day to develop a personal meditation practice. When undertaken with discipline, meditation can lead to clarity and peace of mind.

2. choose  a place where you can sit, (uninterrupted.)

3.Try to Practice meditation for at least five to 10 minutes in the morning and five to 10 minutes at night.

4. Close your eyes, or softly focus them on a spot on the floor about three to four feet in front of you.
